Right now I am reading about the Civil War; I am reading "Heroines of Dixie: Confederate Women Tell Their Story of the War." I found a 1955 paperback "Winter of Desperation" at the thrift store, and now I am reading the first part "Spring of High Hopes" in a hardback with both parts of the book.

I've always wanted to read War & Peace, but am a little daunted by the length (how long has it taken you?). Also, my husband and I are considering opening our home to foster care, so I'm not sure if Orphan Train would encourage, or discourage us, but at least it looks like an interesting read. I'm glad you weren't able to choose between all your current books :)

Comment: thanks for the book, This is a book I have heard of but never read, I will now. I grew up on a farm in the Northwest, I remember the hard times, We raised chickens for the hatching eggs. 2300 of them at a time, so lots of time spent feeding and gathering eggs to be kindled and made ready to he shipped to the hatcheries, I remember bad winters when we could not get the pipes unfrozen so the water could flow into their water trays, we had to carry buckets and butckets of warm water to them,( thirsty little buggers, and when the snow was too deep to get up the road with feed, my brother brought it up on horseback. Sounds like fun to my grandchildren now when I tell them about it, I would love to see them shoveling the **** when we had to clean the chicken houses, we stunk to high heaven, Mom would put a tub on the back porch to rinse us off before we came in for a long hot shower. LOL But there were lots of happy memories too. thanks again, I am sure I will enjoy the book. Marcia Nice bookmark too.
