I make a lot of things! Copper enameling, Ink and watercolor, embroidery, sewing, knitting, photography, woodworking, a little bit of bookbinding.

I currently mostly play Irish music on whistle and flute and am learning mandolin. I also play saxophone, but since that doesn’t really work at Irish sessions I haven’t played it recently. I can play piano but am out of practice on that too. I am a choral singer, some day might get around to practicing enough to be an ok soloist.

.I play a lot of board games and pencil and paper RPGs. I would list my favorites but that's a long list.

For work, I write software for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which is housed in a telescope in Arizona. We will be taking spectra of a huge number of objects that imaging surveys have discovered.

My favorite programing language is Python, my favorite database is PostgreSQL, and my favorite editor is VIM. My workstations are OSX because it includes a POSIX terminal, you can install a real package manager, and still be able to run Adobe products and many games from large companies. The servers I work with are all RedHat/CentOS. I used to run FreeBSD on my personal machine and that was a lot of fun, but then I got into photography and fell into the clutches of Adobe so I settled for OSX.

My knowledge of electronics is pretty awful but Adafruit's Neopixels turn most of the work into software, and CircuitPython exists, so that's been fun to play with.

The world is a beautiful place and I want to learn all about it! I enjoy creating things - visual arts, music, and food. I enjoy spending time in the outdoors and sometime joke that exercise is that thing that happens as a side effect of hanging out with trees. I like growing plants too but I’m not great at it.

I like bugs. All of them. Even the ones that aren’t technically bugs. Sometimes I chase them around with my macro lens on my camera. I recognise that many people do not so unless it’s something like bees or butterflies I will not send images of them to people who don’t specify that they like bugs too.

I enjoy illuminated manuscripts and am often inspired by them in my own art.

I usually prefer music with a strong rhythm and lots of energy. In Classical music, I like modern things like Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov and Carmina Burrana (which I have seen live twice. It’s quite a performance). If it’s got a lot of timpani I probably like it! I like some hard rock bands like Tool, Nothing More, and Disturbed. I play and listen to Irish music, and that also has a great beat to it.

Some electronic music is cool. I’m not very clear on what the different genres are but I think I like aggrotech and industrial. Techno is iffy. Massive Attach is awesome, as is Rammstein.

When I’m in the mood for something a little gentler, I like Early Music and polyphony. Or an achingly beautiful violin line.

I’m not a big fan of operatic vocals but I do enjoy operas as stage productions.

I grew up listening to a lot of “Classics” and “Oldies” and am still fond of them. Tears for Fears falls into that category now. They were the first rock concert I ever went to; I was a kid and went with my parents.
