About Me

Hi, my name is Monica and I am a closet artist. For practical reasons, I am a retired public school teacher with 25 years of service. As life has gotten more complex, my projects have greatly decreased in size.

I am happily married and have one son in college. We usually have at least one dog. Currently, Rupert, chocolate lab, is in residence. We enjoy camping, river and ocean fishing, crabbing, boating, walks on the beach, exploring new places, meeting new people, and time outside.

We have lived in Alaska for over 29 years and still enjoy looking out over the Kachemak Bay every morning. Often there are boats moving about, beautiful sunrises and amazing sunsets, and bald eagles looking for a snack.

Favorite Crafts

Wow!! I enjoy basketry, quilting, applique, knitting, crochet and watercolor. I love looking to see what other artists are creating.

I have been sewing and quilting for a long time and own 8 sewing machines and 1 serger. I have loads of fabric but never seem to have enough. I prefer non-solid, non-directional fabrics. I love decorative threads for free-motion sewing and quilting.

I have invested a lot of time over many years sewing vintage, couture, period costumes and custom garments.

Currently, I am focusing on watercolor and hoping to produce anything worthy to share. I also sew marine canvas and and operate a small shop.

Favorite Books

Anything Jane Austen. I cannot imagine living then without all the amenities and the rigorous social rules and limitations. But I love the relationships between all the characters and how they survive their place in society.

I usually read books by author or genre. I also enjoy Hilary Mantel, George Eliot, any classic English writer and chick lit. I read a lot about traveling to different places and food.

Other

Before Covid-19, we traveled to Kyrgyzstan for a wedding and explored Portugal, Azores, and Istanbul. We also spent over a month in Queensland Australia.

Currently, we are planning to travel to Costa Rica or Belize when things settle down. We would like to have a boat in the Caribbean.

Comment: Thanks for this beautiful decorated envie and extra pc's! It took 3 days to get from Homer to here. Not bad for over the weekend, and our PO is closed on weekends. Comment: Thanks for the postcards and the stickers! I do art journal in fits & starts - I like that it's low pressure. In terms of mixed media, I enjoy making abstract collages with painted papers. I use different things for mark-making: paint pens, gel pens, student-grade pastels, acrylic & India ink. I like playing with all different kinds of materials! And I rarely attempt to do anything realistic. :) Right now all of my postcards are in an Amazon box (or two...). I don't really "collect" them per se - I enjoy the hobby of sending out & receiving mail, just for the activity itself.

Comment: Hi thank you for the nice cards and stickers. The weather here is still cool not quite summer yet but no snow thankfully. All of my cats are rescues I’ve gotten them from other people who no longer cared for them. They are my babies. they are short hair American cats. I don’t have a garden I live in a condo but I would love to have one. I haven’t sketch in a while but I would love to get back into it. Hope you’ enjoy doing watercolors that sounds like a lot of fun!

Normally, I travel for work - mostly to San Francisco. For personal, my favorite place is Disney & the UK. Our spring is in full bloom, now & I'm so happy it's here. It's a short season for us, though - summer will be here before we know it! lol
