Description:

This is one of a monthly series of quotecard postcard swaps held to share a little zinger of wisdom/humour/etc with your partners. It is a pretty basic postcard swap. The only catch is that it MUST contain one of your favourite quotes, but that can be either an old friend or a newly discovered favourite. The postcard can be handmade or commercial. If it is handmade, you can incorporate your quote into the design if you prefer; otherwise you must write it on the back of the card.

Please say where the quote is from or give the credit where it's due. You may use quotes in languages other than English, but if you do, please include a translation for your partner. Do not forget to include the swap name and your user name on the card!

You will send out 3 of these cards, one to each partner, possibly across the globe. They should be postmarked! Please DO NOT send in an envelope.

I will ban if I see multiple no-sends or have any other reason to believe you will not be a good swap partner. Newbies are welcome!! (but must have a filled out profile.)

You must communicate with both me and your partner if you are late for any reason. If there are any problems, please try to work it out with your partner, but if that is not possible, contact me and I will try to help. Please do not give a 3 or 1 rating without giving your partner a chance to fix the situation.

Happy swapping to all! Please contact me if you have any questions or problems.

Note: This swap series was originated by @nicole who later handed it over to me.

This should be a fun, low-pressure swap, so don't feel you have to do a lot of research unless you want to do that.I have a Notepad file in which I save quotations that I like, so I don't usually need to search for them for my Quotecards, but when I want quotes on a particular theme, I put:

[theme keywords] quote OR quotation

into a search engine. I get links to some general quotation sites but also ones which only have quotes on that theme, which often have many more than the general sites.

Some general ones:

The Quote Garden

Think exist

Quotations Book

Quotations Home Page

Quoteland

The Quotations Page

The Quotations Archive

TCPN Quotations

WikiQuote

I am also often asked about sources for nice or 'different' postcards. Museums and art galleries usually have them, and a lot of book shops and stationery stores/departments have nice ones. There are online sources, of course:

  • Amazon has books of postcards.
  • Pomegranate have lots of choice, and their "blowout" packs are a great 'pot luck' deal.
  • postcardstop.com have a good range.
  • VisionWorks is another good US online source, but I can also get some of the cards they stock from my local 'world store' here in the UK.
  • Syracuse Cultural Workers has interesting cards, many of them with quotes and most of them with a 'message'.
  • Zazzle has a lot of postcards too, and they have sites in other countries, including in the UK.
  • The Film Store has film-related postcards, of course, but other subjects too. It is a UK site but you can opt to see the prices in US dollars.

If anyone has suggestions for other sources, please post them here.

Thank you spinjenny for all the great information.

Hello, Where do I get the address to send my quote to? I'm a little confused on how to start the postcard exchange. How does it work. Thank you, Starr

spinjenny 02/ 4/2010 #

@starrlara ~ I am sending you a PM (private message).

fulfilled my newbie swap limit already, maybe next month. :(

Hi, I love postcard swaps and I do have some favorite quotes but I am not sure where they came from who to credit

spinjenny 02/13/2010 #

Hi Tessy! I often see unattributed quotes on the net, so what I usually do is to try putting the whole quote or sections of it (in quotation marks) into a search engine. Quite often I can trace the author that way. If I can't find it, then it becomes "author unknown" or that prolific author, Anon.

I have one question...are the postcards suppose to be the same for each partner, I plan on hand making them, so should they be the same, and have the same quote?, sorry but this is my first swap on here, and I just want to make sure I do it right. :)

spinjenny 02/15/2010 #

That is entirely up to you, Tina. The idea is just to have fun, so if it is easier for you to send the same to everyone, that is fine, but if you prefer to take into account your partners' interests or just find it more interesting to make each one different, that's fine too. :-)

tina826 02/15/2010 #

I got it, thanks, actually, it gets boring making the same thing for each person, so Im glad I get to make different ones :)...cant wait to get started

I've been all over town this weekend looking for postcards. Crazy that the large card shops and book stores around here do not have any. I looked at Pomegranate's website and Holy Cow! Thanks so much for the tip! I ended up ordering some from there. They have a great selection.

TristaLou 02/15/2010 #

How and when do I get my partners?

spinjenny 02/15/2010 #

@TristaLou ~ sign-ups close today, so tomorrow I can check the people who have joined and then assign partners, so that should be tomorrow or at latest Wednesday. When I have done that, the "Swap member options" box at top right of this page will have extra links to see your partners' details and to rate your partners.

TristaLou 02/15/2010 #

okay. Thanks!!!

spinjenny 02/16/2010 #

As sign-ups have ended for this swap, I have now created the next swap in the series, Quotecard Postcard #34. I hope to see some of you in that one too.

spinjenny 03/16/2010 #

It is now more than 2 weeks since the Send deadline for this swap. The 2 people who have not yet marked Sent have already been rated, so it seems as though everyone has sent - thank you!

If have not received your quotecards after a reasonable time, bearing in mind where your partners live, please try to contact them first. If you cannot resolve it between you, please PM me, as I will not be checking the comments for this swap any more.
