About Me

NOTE: i'm experiencing the resurfacing of some old and weird and difficult family stuff, plus my 20 year old cat is "suddenly" sick (shouldn't be a surprise). so, if i'm supposed to rate you on something and i haven't, i'll get to it. sorry for the delay. i'm trying my darndest to get all my swaps out on time, too. i feel really cruddy about this, y'all, i'm so sorry. ~jo

i'm a tech nerd who quit the rat race to go back to school for my RN. i'm still at the pre-requisite stage so don't ask me to save your life... yet!

most of my time is spent studying these days, but i love the break of creating, writing, and getting things in the mail. i love to travel, but with school i don't have the time (or money), so i'm hoping my mailbox will bring bits of the world to me.

i love the colour green... in shades found in nature... also orange and brown.

i do not love the colour pink.

i don't mind if postcards are naked or in an envelope. whichever way you prefer is fine with me.

i really dislike anis (black licorice) and melon, but love black teas, vanilla, rosemary -- earthy sorts of flavours.

i'm a fan of original fairy tails -- not so much the updated, organized, clean, well kept in line modern re-writes, but the originals where the scary woods last more than two minutes and not everyone is happy or even lives at the end of the story. historically i've counted russian fairy tales among my favourites because they seem to keep this darker aspect.

also, the Six Swans. we had a book of illustrated fairy tales when i was young and there was a photo of a girl in a net being flown by her six brothers who had been turned into swans. she had to sew them little shirts from nettles to make them human again, and not speak the whole time she did it. i don't think it's a popular tale, but i've always loved it.

i feel the same way about angels. in my mind they are solid and almost frightening -- really awe inspiring -- not soft and cuddly babies.

i'm taking organic chemistry, pathophysiology, and pharmacology this semester, so anything related to bones, muscles, science, microscopes, cells, molecules... etc., are perfect for me.

and, yes, i'm a 10 year burner. so, nice burning man related stuff would be cool, but not the plastic cord with three beads you got from some hippie in the middle of the night for telling him how to get home, please. :-)

Favorite Crafts

i seem to really like crafts, but i'm just not that good at most of them, yet! i'm hoping getting into swapping will encourage me to spend more time crafting and thereby get in the practice i need to get better!

i just learned to needle felt which is so. much. fun. i'm hoping to find ways to figure that into more of my swaps.

i can hardly draw a proper smiley face, so i'm sticking to stamps, fibers, beads, and writing for the time being.

my beau is a 'zine maker from way back and has been asking me what 'zine i plan to publish. right now i'm joining some 'zine swaps to get my feet wet and he's LOVING what i get in return. (as am i.)

Favorite Books

right now i'm reading a lot of text books about science. to supplement, i'm also reading non-fiction science related books like:

  • "survival of the sickest"
  • "body of work"
  • "stiff"
  • "the disappearing spoon"
  • "the great influenza"

some of my long term favourites are:

  • "the cheese and the worm" (bonus points if you already know what this is)
  • "the pirates! in an adventure with..." series
  • "flowers for algernon"
  • "seeing voices"
  • "the hummingbird's daughter"

Comment: I love your choice of books. I love Kathy Reich's books as well. I'm going to add " The Elegance of the Hedgehog" to my reading list. Sounds interesting.... And the "Understanding Pathophys." , I am so with you there. I had to read something similar when I was in nursing school and it made my brain hurt! LOL!

Comment: Thanks, Jo - got your minizines today. Had a good laugh about "attempts to get the baby to stop crying" - I have so been there - as a babysitter, since I'm not a mom. :)

Comment: A belated rating to thank you for the wonderful Miniature America PC you sent me back in December (sorry :X !) I too like looking at our countries from different perspectives. We're not the biggest and baddest like we think we are! Well, we're not the biggest. (Australia is almost the same size as the US, FYI.) One thing I thought I should point out: Australia's in Summer when you're going through Winter. Our Holiday season is a HOTTT one! Thanks again. :)

Hi Jo, I was just going through my sent swaps file and I noticed this swap was still active (MiniZine #25) . I sent to you 2/15/11 and never got rated for it. The topic of my zine was HATCH/Dr. Sketchy. Please rate me if you received so I can archive this swap. Thanks so much.

Hope all is well with you and yours. Take care. Brenda (beenebag)

Hey! I was just browsing profiles, and saw that you're working towards an RN. That's wonderful! I'm actually working on my EMT-B and EMT-P right now, so I'm with you on focusing on HC studies. I love A&P stuff too - my mom is an A&P professor. Thanks for joining my swap, and there will be more to come!
