Description:

FB is an abbreviation for "Friendship Book". A FB originated before the days of the internet, and was made for pen pal by another pen pal. The book is to be nicely made, and contains the name and address (and possibly some information about) a person, made by another, with name, address and possibly some information. The booklet is passed along through the mail from one pal to another, each adding their information. When the booklet is full, it is sent home for the person it was made for. Then, that person has a list of new people to write to. It was started as a way to get 'free' pen pals. Back in those days when people actually had to pay for a pen pal's name and address. These days, FB's aren't as necessary for a way to find a pen pal, but many of us still find it fun to see them, make them, and pass them on. There are now several different types of FB's, and many variations to the idea. I've swapped FB's for over 20 years, and 'met' one of my best friends this way and have written to her for 22 years!

This swap is for anyone interested in swapping FB's. New to FB's, new to swap-bot, or established. Many have asked to join in FB swaps - so here ya go!

You will each have 2 partners, and make 2 FB's, send one FB to each partner. The FB will be made for you, with your name and address and information on it. Your partners will sign your books with their name/address/info, and you will sign their books. Then you will pass them on to other FB swappers. The books will not be sent back to the person it was made for until there is no room left for more information. Most signers will use address labels for this info, but it is not necessary. You might want to include an email address as well, but it is not necessary.

If you have questions about how to make the FB's, check these sites (sorry, I don't know how to make the 'clicky links'):

Established swappers need at least a 4.8 rating, with no ratings of a "1" since January. Unrated swappers are welcome to join. Your profile MUST be filled out!! (Minimum of 3 categories, info about yourself, your likes/dislikes, what you swap, etc...)

So you don't actually send to your partner? I've never done FBs before so I'm not sure how this works.

USAFwife 07/30/2011 #

Yes, you will send one FB made for you, by you, to each partner.

So we make 2 FBs, with our own info inside? Then when we recieve one we fill them out & then send them to different FB swappers? How do we know who else to send it to? I have an FB made but its kind of big, its a compostion notebook. Is this an eligible FB to swap? Sorry for so many questions. I'm new to swapping, swapbot & FBs.

I guess I am having the same question about knowing who else to send them to and is there a maximum size that these books can not exceed or should exceed?

Ive been fascinated but afraid to jump in yet.

I'm also wondering about the size. I would think it would need to be some what on the smaller side to mail it to multiple people. I am also wondering how many pages you fill it with? Seems like if you even had 50 it might never get back to you so would ten be enough? Is there a standard size (like ATC's have) and number of pages or do we just make whatever we want? Do we send it to whoever or only swap-bot people?

This site gives a short explanation of what they are. I think you would want to make them as light as possible so people don't have to pay too much for postage or they might be more likely not to send it.

This site has a tutorial on how to make one.

For those of you who have questions as to size and how to make them - look at the sites I listed in the swap requirements! They have the info you need! (copied from above):

A composition book is NOT a FB. This is the definition copied from the swap-bot glossary: "Friendship Book (FB) - A booklet that is passed via the mail from person to person. It includes addresses of all the signers and is intended for the recipient to find new penpals and/or swap partners. It is generally made of a few pages of paper (any size, but usually made to fit in a standard size envelope) stapled together. The cover or front page includes who made the booklet (complete with name and address) and who the booklet was made for (complete with name and address). The rest of the booklet is reserved for the “signers.” The person who signs the last available space then sends the booklet back home to the person the booklet was made for."

The composition book is probably a slam, a lot of people use those to make fat slams but never friendship books!

Thanks ladies, found all the info I needed for my unanswered questions. This sounds intriguing and may be a new addiction for me,

USAFwife 08/ 5/2011 #

Thanks RainyC! :) Those are the sites I refer people to the most when they have FB questions. :)

And, yes, caregvr1, there are some fat slams out there! Although, I did see something called a 'friendship book' made out of a comp book on Google - but that's not what these FB's are! This type of FB should be a small handmade booklet that would easily fit into a standard size envelope, have 2 to 8 pages. The booklet is made for one person (with name, addresses and/or email address and possibly some information about that person) and made by another person (with the same information). The booklets are passed from one (usually pen pal, but not always) to another until there is no room left for more labels. Then the person it's made for will have lots of new pen pals to write to! That's the idea, anyway. They can be plain or fancy, but should be neat - straight edges, pages all fitting together nicely.
