Description:

I am always hearing about art exhibitions that I think sound interesting, but then I never get around to going to them. So I’m hosting this swap to give me the impetus to get out of the house and go experience some art by someone else – and hopefully be inspired by it…

There are four parts to this challenge:

Part 1: Go to an art exhibition; make notes and keep souvenirs of your visit
Part 2: Make a piece of art (minimum 4” x 4”) inspired by your visit
Part 3: Write a letter about your visit to the exhibition. For example, was it nearby or did you have to travel a long way? Was it by your favourite artist or one you had never heard of? What did you like/dislike/feel inspired by? How did you use this experience in designing your own piece of art? Does the artist have a website or are there any books, films etc about them which you would recommend?
Part 4: Mail a package to your partner containing the artwork you made, the letter, and at least one (but maybe more?) from the following additional items (sender’s choice, but it must relate to the exhibition in some way).

For example:
* a souvenir like a pen or a fridge magnet from the gift shop of the gallery
* A flier, poster or brochure from the exhibition.
* Something handmade, but decorated with or inspired by the art you saw
* Something bought elsewhere that somehow relates to it in style, theme etc.
* Anything else you can think of, e.g. ephemera like your ticket from the exhibition, a postcard of that artists work, an article about them cut from a newspaper or magazine?

Please note: Looking at another artists work online or in a book doesn’t count; you need to actually GO somewhere! So this swap might not be suitable if you live in an isolated village with no local art galleries. But I’m leaving a long gap before the Send By date, so perhaps if you will be venturing closer to civilisation sometime over the summer, you could add a visit to an art gallery to your itinerary?
You don't have to wait for partners to be assigned - why not go to an exhibition next weekend?

Warning: Some art can contain shocking images, nudity etc. If you have a problem with that sort of thing, it might be better not to join the swap, as its Senders choice so you need to be open-minded about what you receive.

As this swap has several parts, I am going to be fairly strict about who I let in; Newbies are allowed, but I will check participants just before sign up date and anyone whose ratings have slipped or who seems to be behind on their swaps will be dropped.

Please rate your partner a 5 if they:
1) Went to an art exhibition,
2) Sent you a letter about it
3) Included a piece of their own art inspired by it,
4) Included at least one other thing with the same theme.

Love this idea! Can it be an exhibit you've already been to? I went to England 2 years ago. I got tons of souvenirs, and saw some amazing art. Salvador Dali, Picasso, Van Gogh...

My idea was more that the swap should inspire you to go out and look at something new. But if that's not possible, and you have enough memories of a previous visit to write a letter about it and create a piece of art, and spare souvenirs that you don't mind passing on to your swap partner, then I think that would be ok too...

That's understandable- just asking cause my town is kinda small. They have a huge music sceen, but not many interesting exhibitions. Every once in a while they do though.
