This is a nice simple embroidery swap for us redwork lovers! You will stitch 2 redwork 'penny squares' approx 6"x6" in size and send them to your partner. Nothing fancy, just a nice simple swap in the hectic holiday season. Plenty of time to sign up and send out in the new year. Stitch away your Christmas stress!! Whats a penny square? "In America, dry goods stores sold 6 inch muslin squares marked with a variety of designs for a penny each. These "penny squares" are often seen incorporated into old Redwork bedspreads and linens. The patterns are usually simple line drawings." No newbies, no no-sends, no ratings below 4.7. Embroider on muslin, calico, white cotton, anything within that definition.

Thanks for telling me about this. It sounds really fun. I never work with just one color, so this should be a great challenge of creativity.

I think this sounds really neat. Always cool to learn something new. However, I'm going to sit this one out, due to the overwhelming amount of schoolwork and I have due in the next few weeks, and going home for Christmas and all. Maybe some other time! :)

My paternal grandmother did 100s of these (as pillowcase decoration) for her family. I just recently discovered the "iron-on" patterns are STILL TO BE FOUND in my local Wal-mart (on the bottom shelf, near the embroidery storage stuff) and I picked up a half-dozen designs -- just out of sentiment.

Am I right in thinking that what you call muslin is what we call calico here in the U.K? I would like to join this swap and need to make sure that I have the correct fabric.

lulu: check this definition. I suspect you are correct. I've always considered muslim to be any fine-woven 100% cotton, bleached or unbleached.

Oh how I wish I could join this swap. I've got too many embroidery projects promised to even consider another, when I know I'd never finish in time. My mom has a bunch of cotton dish towels with redwork in the corners that my great grandmother made. Those were the "special" towels, and my mom could actually use them to bribe us into helping with the dishes when we were little.

lulu muslin is like calico, using either is fine for this swap. It's not the time of year for swaps that fry your brain thinking about what to use!

Sorry! Thank you too, CADlady. I went onto the link you provided. What we call muslin here in the U.K. is a fine gauzy fabric, not siutable for this kind of embroidery.
