Description:

"I beg your pardon," said Jane, politely. "But, you see, we're used to--er--fur and feathers and these animals seem to be made of stars."

"But of course they are!" said the boy, opening his eyes very wide. "What else could they be made of?"

~ Mary Poppins Comes Back

Good evening! It's a fine night for a performance. Do you have your tickets for the circus in the sky?

You're invited to create a circus animal pendant for your partner using the techniques in this online tutorial as a guideline. It's modeled after an Anthropologie necklace in stores right now.

You may use whatever method and materials work best for you, although the basic look and idea of the necklace should be the same. You don't necessarily need to use a chain, for example, you may use a silk cord or slip your pendant onto an existing necklace chain if you wish.

Your necklace should:

  • be around 20"- 24" in length
  • include one nice 3D animal that dangles from a necklace and faces horizontally (that is, it should not dangle vertically, mouth or tail first)
  • the animal should be between approximately 1" and 2.5"
  • be appropriately embellished with beads, sequins, fabric, etc
  • be neatly handmade by you using quality materials.

Participants should refresh themselves with "The Evening Out ," the chapter in Mary Poppins Comes Back upon which this idea is based. It's charming! The animal does not necessarily have to be one of the specific animals described in this chapter, however, as it's the basis for inspiration only. And obviously, the animals may take their mortal forms and you do not need to use stars to make them. ;)

This is a sender's choice swap for animal, colors, etc, so expect to receive a wonderful surprise! You'll send out one whimsical, bejeweled animal necklace and receive one in return.

Leaving plenty of time to sign up so everyone may experiment, figure out materials, etc! :)

I adore this! I really do =D

It just goes to prove my theory that you can make almost anything fit the children's book theme, hee hee. (I actually came across the tutorial first and then thought of a book to fit, for those who don't hang out in the HAW forums.)

By the way, the Anthropologie necklace this is modeled after costs $38...so this is actually quite a bargain if we can pull it off!

It is funny, every now and then a swap pops up that makes you REALLY excited and opens the flood gates of imagination and creativity and this is one of those!!!

Hooray! I got the plastic animals I ordered from eBay today. :) Time to start experimenting.

I made an elephant this weekend to use on top of a circus themed assemblage box I was making & it was so easy. The elephant turned out super cute & made the perfect topper for the box! E6000 glue seemed to work the best & will be what I use for the swap. I LOVE this swap - thanks for the idea!!

BTW I was ale to find the animals at Michaels and Hobby Lobby as well.

I had been experimenting with animals in bracelets. These are darling too! GREAT idea!! I buy them at the dollar store too.

@CJ E-6000 makes me a little anxious, but I am going to brave it for the sake of having a circus animal pendant. So glad you joined the swap!

@homeandheart An animal bracelet! Will you share pictures, please?

I hope there will be more of Mary Poppins swaps... Unfortunately I am not good at crafting and I have to skip this one...

This sounds like such great fun, and I have actually never read Mary Poppins before so that chapter excerpt delighted me. I really want to do this, but I don't have many of the supplies so on the watch list and try to remember next time I hit up Joann's. ^_^

Meri, I think @HollyHox is planning a few other Mary Poppins swaps...if you have ideas for types, please share them in the idea thread in the forum!

@midsummermuse Oh, I hope you'll read the books--they're so lovely! And I'm not a jewelry maker, so I can attest that this should be fairly easy to do. If you decide to make the animal and just use a pre-made necklace with it, you should be able to get away with just buying a small packet of bails, plus glue and embellishments. And the animal, of course.

I will indeed be doing some! Please do let us know if you have any thoughts. I will try and make some for crafters and non-crafters =D
