Description:

I re-use many of my Christmas cards in my crafting, but the majority of them just go into the recycling bin, so this year I am going to send the leftovers to St. Jude's Ranch for their Recycled Card Program.

Please read the information provided in the above link - they provide guidelines re what cards are acceptable, an address to send them to, and the cheapest way to send them.

This is an "honour" swap. (";) Please mail some used Christmas cards to St. Jude's Ranch and then write a snail mail note to your partner telling them how many you sent off and how you felt about it.

This swap is open to all SB members in good standing, including newbies with full profiles, and people with no excessive or unexplained 1s and/or 3s. (If you are unsure whether you will be screened in, please pm me in advance of the sign up deadline to discuss. Thx.)

BONUS INCENTIVE: Once partners are assigned, I will draw a name using the random number generator and send the winner this cute clear stamp. It will be perfect for your Valentine's Day crafts!

Have fun!

ADDED Jan. 7:

If you live outside the U.S. and have a local charity, you may send your cards there but please provide your partner with the full name of the charity and its website when you write to them.

The number of cards you send is not important - it is the thought that counts here! (";)

What a wonderful idea! I will start saving my all occasion cards for them as well. Thanks for hosting this swap!

I have been cleaning through my cards and prepping them to send to St. Jude's for a while now. I will definitely be joining this swap!

Maggiesmother 12/24/2010 #

Just curious - what do they do with them? Watching for now.

kafekafe 12/25/2010 #

@Maggiesmother This is what I found on their website:

"When donor cards arrive here at the Ranch, the card front is removed from it's back or inside portion. The donor card front is then centered on either an ivory or white backing resulting in a 'new' card with a recycled front panel."

kafekafe 12/25/2010 #

And then they sell the "new-made" cards.

Thank you so much for hosting this swap. I cannot join because I'm at my limit but I appreciate you opening my eyes to such a great cause. I will definately be sending them all my cards from now on!

In Australia we have Planet Ark, although I don't know if they re-create with them or just recycle (pulp) them. It would cut down on costs and carbon miles to recycle our cards locally. What would you say to that? Could we do it through our best local organisation to be truly eco-friendly? No time for me to start a similar local one, so please let me know. Please PM me to tell me you've answered me here (or just answer in the PM if others don't need the answer too). Thanks so much! Just watching for now. Taking my Xmas cards down today or tomorrow, so I really need to know! :)

Happy New Year!

No time for me to start a similar local *swap, that should have read. ;)

I have never heard of this program through St Jude's...and I thank you for bringing awareness to a great cause! We actually participate in an online Christmas card exchange, and as a reasult get lots of cards. We are going to post this information back on the site and encourage others to 'recycle' their cards to St Jude as well!

One question...does anyone know why they can't accept Hallmark or American Greeting cards?

Barbi 01/ 6/2011 #

Probably due to trademark laws... can't re-sell certain artists' work perhaps due to contracts with those companies? (I'm just guessing)

papercaper 01/ 6/2011 #

I think @barbi might be right, added to which Hallmark + American Greetings are the two companies biggest + baddest enough to mean business when it comes to litigation re copyright infringement. They might even have to do it on behalf of their coterie of artists. Probably just blanket policy for companies so large. :-/

TurtleLove 01/ 6/2011 #

well...I am no lawyer...but I will just see this as a reason to choose the little guy if I am out buying greeting cards

RetroJane 01/ 7/2011 #

I have been debating about joining this swap, as I don't have many cards to send if I did join. :\

Sorry I have not been around ladies to address your questions and concerns. Thx to those of you who stepped in and answered!

I am extending the sign up date of this swap to give people a chance to still join if they wish, based on the below info:

Does anyone know of a charity that does this in Canada?

TerryF 01/12/2011 #

It doesn't matter where you get the cards - I have asked all of my neighbours to give me their cards to send in too.

Sorry, I have not been able to find a similar Canadian charity.
