You have to pay to get a soldier. Are we sure this is a good site? I love the idea, but to give my credit card ???

@kgeslab Soldiersangels.com is a REAL and GREAT website. In order to ADOPT a solider you have to be an approved member and pay the $1 charge to become one, this is to make sure that these soldiers get real true and serious angels. I have been apart of the website for 3 years now, and it is amazing! There are so many other things you can do outside of adopting a solider through the site to help them out as well. I know giving the credit card is kind of unnerving these days, but i promise this is a good site and well worth it. Your small donation goes towards making care packages for the deployed.

It is $1.00 minimum to become a verified angel. If you are uncomfortable giving your personal information, purchase a VISA gift card and use that. Just a thought...

I've belonged to that website since 2009. I had no problems with it and used my PO Box address.

I was a Soldier's Angel for a year back in 2007. I didn't continue only because life got really crazy and I didn't want to flake on someone. I didn't have any problems with the group, and didn't get charged more than the $1 fee. It is a really good site. But, just FYI to new members there - the soldiers don't always write back. That was the case I had, and I'll admit it was hard at times to keep finding something to write about or send. Don't want to scare anyone off, just wanted you to be prepared for that.

I've been a part of Soldiers Angels since my hubby was deployed in 2005-2006 it's an absolutely WONDERFUL organization!!!

honestly, I've had more problems on this site, signing up for swaps, and not receiving anything.. or having people rate me low even though I send GREAT packages!! I've never had a problem with soldiers angels, nor has it ever made me feel bad about anything... it's such a morale lifter.. for US and the SOLDIERS!!!

Obstminkerl 11/16/2010 #

Are there just US-Soldiers or Soldiers from the whole world??

Zefaniya 11/20/2010 #

Ive been a part of Soldiersangels for 5 years and I agree it's a great site to belong to. I've only received American Soldiers to write to through it, as far as I know.

cinderella730 12/28/2010 #

I've only received US soldiers so far as well

wanted to share these links to make neck coolers for the soldiers... with it getting to be spring/summer, the temps are going to be WAY up in the 100's... (my hubby was there when there were 140 degree days!!!) these would be GREAT to make and send to soldiers!!!

Cake in a jar

If you haven't already heard of this awesome care package item, you're about to stumble upon something awesome!!! These are GREAT and just something that's homemade to include in a care package.

It's basically a mini cake inside of a mason jar. It arrives moist and fresh and tasty! (did I mention it's homemade??)

Here's how to make them:

Get wide-mouth canning jars. You can find them at Walmart, other stores, or online. Boil the jars to sterilize.

1 package of cake mix or any cake recipe

1.

Make the cake batter according to the instructions or recipe

2.

Grease the jar by liberally spraying the inside with cooking spray

3.

Fill jar no more than 1/2 way with batter

4.

Place jars on cookie sheet on rack in the oven. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean @ 400 degrees

5.

While baking, boil jar lids in a pan of water

6.

When cake is done, take on jar out at a time and cover with hot lid. Screw on jar ring tightening it slightly

7.

The lid will seal as it cools. Listen to hear the "ping" as they seal.

8.

As the cake cools, it will pull away frm the jar slightly. That's ok, it just means that it will slide out of the jar easily.

9.

DO NOT FROST cake in the jar! Send frosting along.

10.

Make sure you wrap the jars well (bubble wrap is preferrable, but wadded newspaper or clothing and other items will pad it too)

Don't forget to include a couple of plastic knives for the frosting and some plastic forks.
