Description:

Calling all you threadies and those that want to give thread crochet a try! This swap is for you! With the holidays just around the corner I thought it would be fun to make some pretty snowflake ornaments.

For this swap you will have 1 partner and you will be crocheting them 2 snowflake ornaments. This is senders choice. You will use crochet thread, size 10 (bedspread weight) or smaller if you wish, but nothing larger and NO yarn. You can use any pattern you choose and embellish however you like. Snowflakes should measure about 4-5 inches, a little larger or smaller is okay, but don’t make them really tiny or really big. You will stiffen your ornaments, we don’t want any floppy (melting) snowflakes, and include a hanger.

Crochet Pattern Central has lots of patterns, and directions on how to stiffen your ornaments, or you can do a google search and you will come up with lots of ideas.

This will be international, snowflakes are really lightweight so shipping shouldn’t cost to much. This is open to all group members who are in good standing, I will be checking!

If you have any questions please pm me or leave a post below and I will get back to you asap.

ENJOY!

Hi, Can you tell me the difference between thread and yarn? I'm from the Netherlands and I already tried to find a translation. Is thread coton? And size 10 doesnt tell me much either. Maybe it's the same size as we have here, but I'm not sure. What size crochet hook do you use with this thread. I can find translations for sizes in crochet hooks, then I can figure out the size of the thread.

Warmest crochet wishes, Harineke

@harienke thread is made from cotton or cotton blends, and is finer (thinner) than yarn, but not to be confused with the cotton you would use for dishcloths which is muchheavier and thicker. I have also heard it called lace weight or cobweb thread, it is mostly used for doilies, tablecloths, bookmarks, and lace edgings, the hooks I use are small steel hooks, and are US size 5 or 1.30 mm, and size 7 or .85 mm I hope this helps.

Just so you all know... be sure your pins are RUSTPROOF! I did some practice flakes with different patterns this past week and yesss.... those cheap crappy pins from Walmart (no idea what they're made of) they rust haha. Oops. My snowflakes have teeny faint tinges of rust now. Bleh.

I ordered some stainless steel pins off Hobby Lobby's website this past weekend so they'll be here in time for the swap.

I've been practicing to make snowflakes with thicker coton and used Modge pode sparkle to stiffen them and I stiffend one with Paverpol. Both work well I think and I had a lot of fun eperimenting. Now I only have to find the right size coton and I'll be off and I've got to adjust the paterns a little or find different ones to make.
