Description:

I love getting penpal letters, but often try to imagine the writers "voice" as he or she writes their letter. I thought it would be cool to create a swap where we swap introductory voice-recorded "letters" in the form of standard cassette tapes.

In order for this swap to work, participants must have available to them a recorder/playback device that records/plays standard cassette tapes.

You will record your voice talking about your life and whatever you'd like to share with your partner (think of it as an introductory penpal letter that you read aloud). You should fill 60 minutes of tape (tapes come in 60 minute formats, with 30 minutes on each side). You don't need to record straight for 60 minutes, you can use the tape as a voice diary over multiple days if you'd like. Please try to speak as clearly as possible, but use a "conversational" voice. it takes a little practice, but it sounds better if you're relaxed instead of reading from a script.

You'll mail this tape to your one partner, and you'll receive a tape from one partner. If you choose to keep in touch with your partner, you can do so by mailing additional cassettes or traditional snail mail, or a combination of both.

You should rate your partner a 5 based on:

  1. that you received a cassette with approximately 60 minutes of playback time.

  2. that the tape is playable and is audible.

Cassettes should be mailed in their cases in a padded envelope. Please make a decorative insert for the tape case so your partner can keep the tape. Info to include on the inside of the insert is: real name and swap-bot handle, mailing address, and date(s) of the recording. You can also include a small handwritten note if there's anything else you'd like to say!

If this swap is popular, I will consider adding additional partners if participants give feedback that they'd like more than one partner.

requirements to join:

  1. participants must have a minimum of a 4.9 overall rating.

  2. participants must have no 1's or 3's dated in the last year.

  3. all "currently in" swaps must be up to date (no exceptions)

  4. participants must have a well filled in profile.

  5. no newbies, sorry! you must have a minimum of 10 rated swaps(type 1's don't count for this swap).

I will ban participants who I deem to be questionable swappers. If an exception needs to be made to the above criteria, please send me a PM. Failure to send or rate will result in removal from future swaps I host. Hopefully it will not be neccessary, but I will angel this swap if need be.

Oh wow, as a kid, my penpal and I did this. It was so much fun getting to hear his British accent for the first time :) We both sounded like dorks.. all tense and choppy conversation haha. Was awesome though :) He had to write me a letter asking me to translate a little, he couldn't understand my accent haha. I wrote him back to say I don't have an accent hehehe (I knew full well that I did!)

I don't have anything that records cassettes (or plays them, for that matter) these days.

i just wanted to point out that many electronic stores (best buy, future shop, circuit city and college bookstores) carry voice recorders (they're often used to record lectures by college students or doctors and lawyers use them for dictation.). Because there are digital versions available the cassette versions can often be found pretty cheap - around $20 USD new. not only do they record, but also play back. I still have my microcassette recorder from my college days (I used mine to record my african drumming class, and the playback to practice). it's probably possible to find used versions on amazon or ebay for cheap too.
