Description:

In an effort to remember the children of the holocaust, The Holocaust Museum in Houston is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies (BUTTERFLY PROJECT). To honor/represent the 1.5 million children who lost their lives in the holocaust.

For this swap you will make two or more butterflies, one to send to your partner and one or more (they are shooting for 1.5 million) to send to:

Holocaust Museum Houston Butterfly Project Education Department 5401 Caroline St. Houston, TX 77004 USA

The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition, currently scheduled for Spring 2013, for all to remember. The Museum has already collected an estimated 400,000 butterflies. And you will also honor their memory in your home when you display your received butterfly...

•Butterflies should be no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches.

•Butterflies may be of any medium the artist chooses, but two-dimensional submissions are preferred.

•Glitter and all glitter-related products should not be used.

•Food products (cereal, macaroni, candy, marshmallows or other perishables) also should not be used.

•If possible, e-mail a photograph of your butterflies, to butterflyproject@hmh.org.

I hope you will join me in this most touching and beautiful tribute to these children...

This is the first swap I am hosting, so no ratings of under 4.9 seems to be standard, newbies with well filled out profile; I trust your hearts. Depending on the number of swappers I may or may not be able to angel...

and now a poem to inspire us all:

The last, the very last,

So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow.

Perhaps if the sun's tears would sing

against a white stone....

Such, such a yellow

Is carried lightly 'way up high.

It went away I'm sure

because it wished

to kiss the world good-bye.

For seven weeks I've lived in here,

Penned up inside this ghetto.

But I have found what I love here.

The dandelions call to me

And the white chestnut branches in the court.

Only I never saw another butterfly.

That butterfly was the last one.

Butterflies don't live in here, in the ghetto.

There is already a swap like this going on - http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/69692 .

goddessfox 09/ 6/2010 #

In that swap you are only sending a picture of the butterfly, in this one you will send an actual butterfly to your partner. I am going to keep this one up, if no one joins then nothing is lost...thanks for the info though. I figure there can never be too many butterflies:-)

theladylilac 09/ 6/2010 #

just watching for now :)

Cocoa 09/ 6/2010 #

I was in the swap Retrojane mentioned and I checked and it was Aug 2009. I think this is worth doing again!!

bluecrayons 09/ 6/2010 #

may these be crocheted?

goddessfox 09/ 6/2010 #

I think crochet would be fabulous and stunning. I believe if there is no macaroni and glitter on it you are good to go. It sounds beauiful! I wish I could crochet.

bettflow09 09/ 7/2010 #

No, sorry to correct you on this @Cocoa ...but the one @RetroJane mentioned is going on right now. Here's the link:), but the send date for the other swap is 12/30. I agree, I think this one is worth doing again, even if there are more than one swap for these butterflies going on. The more butterflies made for this cause the better:))

I am seriously thinking about joining both, but don't want to get in over my head and have alot going on. Got both swaps in watch for now:)

Oh look!!! HERE is a link to a crochet pattern for a butterfly that is in honor of the children that died in the Holocaust:) Oh wow.....I am so excited to find this pattern!!! I am such a crochet-a-holic....now I know I've gotta give this a try!!!

goddessfox 09/ 7/2010 #

That crocheted butterfly is so lovely, and looks so soft!

jennymomma 09/19/2010 #

Thanks so much for including the link! We are creating butterflies to send this week! We homeschool, so we are adjusting our lessons this week...I am also a massage therapist...our biz name is Butterfly Touches, so the kids liked the idea of putting some in the office and sending some...Again, thank you so much for posting the link!

goddessfox 09/19/2010 #

The more butterflies there are in the world the better! I am so glad you are including the children, I think their butterflies will be the most touching of all the butterflies. Christy

i think i will let my four year old girl make a butterflie to.. she loves to do craft.. can some one tell me what the measurements is in cm?

goddessfox 09/22/2010 #

I do not know, but you can get a conversion on the internet; that is how I always do it.

imakebelieve 09/25/2010 #

I haven't been on the bot in a long time, but was looking for a project when I saw this swap and it caught my eye. I did this play in high school, my freshman year. I played one of the children in Aushchwitz. My experiences in that play have stuck with me all of these years. It was my first play and I had to cry. It was so easy because the story was so moving. Thanks for a great swap. I am looking forward to making my butterflies. I am teaching a fairy school class at our co-op, maybe I will get them to make butterflies.

goddessfox 09/27/2010 #

imakebelieve, What a moving experience, thank you for sharing. It would be lovely if the kids made butterflies too! I always told my children to make a wish when they see a butterfly or fly a way balloons.

ROCKIE 09/28/2010 #

If you do this again I will join, I will check out the site itself too. Thanks

I'm a little confused (what's new). We send a butterfly to the Butterfly Project. What do we send to our partner? I thought it was supposed to be an ATC - like a miniature version of the large one. Could you please clarify? Thank you.

goddessfox 10/ 1/2010 #

Hi I too spend a great deal of time confused...:-) You send a butterfly to the project and a butterfly to your partner. If you want to send an ATC that is great. There are no limitations except 8X10 or smaller and no foodstuffs or glitter.

Enjoy!

Christy

I sat right here and crocheted a butterfly from that link--it only took a few minutes, then saw that the sign up for this swap is well-passed :(

If I've also missed the other one, I'll just send to the address mentioned above.

goddessfox 05/11/2011 #

Even though the swap is over, anyone can send butterflies to the butterfly project.

Peace to all...
