Description:

What is a Junk Oracle?

It is a system of divination using everyday found objects and your intuition to determine what the objects mean. Ancient peoples used bones, stones, sticks, animal entrails, bird flight, and whatever objects were at hand to divine events. This is a very modern twist along the same lines.

(swap description edited to remove references to forum thread)

For this swap, you will send your partner three components to complete the swap:

1) At least 12 small items to start or add to a junk oracle collection. You can purchase items, but this is a good opportunity to rummage through your stash and your kids' toy boxes to see what inspires you!

caveat-if you are sending used items, please make sure they are clean and in good shape.

2) A nice bag (handmade or purchased) to hold the items. This needs to be at least tarot bag sized, but a bigger one (Crown Royal bag size) would be nice so everyone can keep adding to their collections.

3) Include a list of all the items you are including and what you think the items represent. Use your intuition to determine what the items mean to you. Your partner may see things differently, but that's what makes it interesting!

Examples:

shell= emptiness

scissors =cutting away things in your life

dog = loyalty/friendship

...and so on....

Recap

1) 12 (or more!) small items

2) Bag

3) List of interpretations

If this is successful, we may do later themed swaps to add to our collections.

This is a fairly quick turnaround, as this is not profile specific and you can go ahead and gather items.

At last! Thank you for hosting it!
I will join later, but will start finding items right away :)

I have my items and list ready to go---waiting to see who my partner is before starting on the bag.

Oh I so wish I could join!! But we are moving around the dates of this swap....darn!!

This might sound snooty, but... before sending mine, please see the photos on my Flickr account.

I keep pieces to seed other oracles, so whatever you send will either get used in my oracle or re-gifted, or possibly put on the Junk Oracle Shrine.

Please note this is not a trash oracle, so don't send me pop tops, plastic cutlery, used birthday candles. I also have more than enough pretty pebbles, plain buttons, rocks, stones, gems, and glass marbles. I don't use any of them in my oracle as they have no meaning to me.

That does not mean you can't use them in your oracle, though. If it speaks to you, it is a valid tool.

I do hundreds of these readings a year, especially in October. The items must be sturdy enough to be handled, fondled, shown, used, and otherwise pawed through. Nothing sharp please.

I currently have a Crown Royal bag. You can send me another one if you're including the whiskey with it. :) I don't really need another bag, so I'm good in that area, but I might appreciate something a little classier. It needs to easily contain about two measuring cups of Junk plus a hand.

Thanks for allowing me to twist your dark little braiiiins!!

What size is a crown royal bag?

LeftHandedGoth 09/25/2010 #

They come in different sizes depending on how big the bottle is, but 9" x 4" is about the size of the ones I have.

Ah great! Thank @LeftHandedGoth
