What is a thaumatrope you ask? You all know about the bird in the cage illusion, right? Where you have a 2-sided circular card on a string. On one side of the card is a bird. On the other side is a cage. You twirl the string, making the card spin, creating the illusion that the bird in now inside the cage. That's a thaumatrope. =) Well for this, you will be making your own version of this, but with a mermaid on one side, and whatever you would like on the other. If you need to know more about this, you can look online. There are many examples and instructions on how to make your own. It's pretty simple. =) Use whatever medium you would like. Make your card a minimum of 3 inches at its widest. And I'd suggest testing it before sending it to see how it looks and to make sure it stays together when you pull the string. =P Any questions or comments, please feel free to post below.

I was thinking maybe a mermaid on one side and maybe scenery on the other, then she's in the scenery.

Or maybe a mermaid on one side and fish on the other.

Or a throne?

Or she's holding something? shrug haha

haha. Well the pants idea might not work 'cause when you spin the card, you still see the tail, too. You could try it though. Maybe it would work. I dunno. haha. I might try out a few different things before I pick which I'm gonna do.

I love thaumatropes!! I have my students make them. Just be careful when using a string, one image needs to be upside down for this to work. If you feel this might be too hard you can atttch a straw to the bottom of your thaumatrope(cut a slit in it, slide your circle into the slot and tape or glue it on) and spin it that way, then you do not have to make one of your images upside down. That is how I have my 6th graders make them. Hope this helps. I can't wait to make mine!

Ok, last night I was successful in finally finding string suitable for this swap for the thaumatrope, so I am back and can't wait to get started on it! Sorry about that guys, but I couldn't find any string there, of course it's always the last place you look!
