Description:

I know you want $100 back in your pocket, and even if you don't, this is a challenge everyone SHOULD do! I did this a couple years ago when things were getting tough financially, and heck, they still are! So roll up your sleeves and dive in, you won't be sorry!

Also, I based the $100 amount on my personal weekly grocery spending for the family, but of course this will differ from person to person.

THE CHALLENGE

In this challenge you will go ONE WEEK where the only grocery shopping you do is... in your FREEZER or PANTRY. That's right, you can only use what you already have on hand! No cheating either buy doing an extra-big shopping trip before you start the challenge. In fact, it would be best to start this swap on the day you would normally do your weekly shopping trip...only this time you skip going to the grocery store and head for your freezer and pantry instead.

Of course this challenge is not meant to harm or endanger anyone, so if you absolutely need to buy something then by all means, do so.

SWAP DETAILS

YOU ARE MORE THEN WELCOME TO START THIS CHALLENGE BEFORE PARTNERS ARE ASSIGNED.

You will need to keep a simple log (either handwritten or typed) detailing:

  • your daily meals at home: what ingredients you found to use and what you made

  • what exceptions/purchases you just HAD to make during this week

  • how much you spend on grocery each week on average and how much you think you saved

  • at the end of the week- write 2-3 paragraphs on any particular/persistent struggles, what you've learned (if anything) and how your family (if any) felt about it, and if it was easier or harder then you thought it would be.

STUMPED on what to cook?? I believe allrecipes.com and recipezaar.com have a program where you can input the ingredients you HAVE and it will show you recipes of what you can MAKE with it all! Also, think outside of the box a little as far as ingredient substitutions and consider making things HOMEMADE.

PARTICIPANTS

_Everyone is welcome to join, Newbies as well! Experienced swappers must have a 4.85 rating with no un-explained 1's or 3's in the last 4 months.

I will angel if necessary.

can i buy milk? and I automatically get my produce delivered to my door each week...is that cheating?

sduckson 05/26/2010 #

@scrappymommy4 well, the milk I understand and the produce is up to you....if it is able to be skipped for the week then it is your choice, if not then it's not a big deal :) the point with the challenge is just to try and use as much as possible from what you already have and see how much you saved for the week. even with milk and produce purchases you are more then welcome to join in!

haha, I've been doing this for months now, anyway. I go shopping so rarely and I've had more than a few weird meals...like tuna and spaghetti, haha. Cute idea.

@wackywallflower you should join in and show us how a pro does it, lol!
