Description:

Let's celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day by using what we have instead of buying new!

Did you know that according to NAMTA, in the US, we spend $4.2 billion per year on art supplies, and many of those supplies are toxic and harmful to the environment? Instead of buying new, let's pledge to make April a craft destash month! Together, we can have a really big impact on the environment and on our own wallets.

This swap is in conjunction with the April Stash Bust Challenge on Dollar Store Crafts. You can join the Challenge by pledging to use only craft supplies from your stash for the month of April. Then, grab a badge from the official site and put it on your website or Swap-bot profile. There is even a Stash Craft Contest happening on Dollar Store Crafts with fantastic prizes. Check it out!

Many of us have ginormous stashes of craft supplies with many fun and creative projects waiting to be born, but we also probably have some extra items that haven't quite found their way into our projects and maybe never will. For this swap, you'll send your one partner a 6 x 9 inch (or larger) envelope stuffed full of your excess craft supplies. You can send paper scraps, fabric, ribbon, yarn, stickers, embellishments, etc... Anything you already have on hand and that you think your partner would enjoy. You are sending supplies that you have not had a use for, but like always, only send clean, quality items that you would like to receive.

Notes on envelope size: 6 x 9 inches is the smallest size envelope you can send, but any larger size is great, too. "Stuffed full" can be a subjective term, so let's all try to include at least five different types of items in our packages. This is a wide open swap, but remember: the intent is to help us reduce our personal stashes while, in turn, receiving some "new-to-us" supplies in the mail! Be sweet to your partner! :)

New users are totally welcome in this swap! In fact we are inviting new members to Swap-bot specifically for this special earth-friendly swap. However, all current users must have over a 4.8 rating with no recent 1 ratings. Contact me for exceptions. I will remove anyone who looks suspicious. This swap is eco-friendly and people-friendly!!

For the entire month of the April, let's pledge not to buy any new craft materials, tools or supplies for the April Stash Bust!

Check out all of the cool sites participating in the April Stash Bust Challenge:

These sites will have tons of stash-busting tutorials and links all month long.

Leave a link to your blog or website in the comments if you are taking the April Stash Bust Pledge!

can we please clarify 'stuffed full'? due to max thicknesses for letter mail vs a parcel, it is cheaper here to send a larger, slim envelope than a smaller, fat one. is there any approximate $ amount or any other guidelines? and I'm not sure I can pledge not to buy new stuff though!

thanks, rebecca

i am VERY excited for this, i have a HUGE ever-growing stash i would love to pass on some items for a fellow crafter to help bring to life! :)

racheljohnson 03/31/2010 #

Thanks for joining! As for envelope size, anything over 6 x 9 inches is fine - it is your choice whether you want to go thinner or bulkier. There is no dollar amount, but I just changed the swap description to include a requirement of at least five different craft supply items in your envelope. That is still really wide open, but I hope that everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to reduce their own stash and give some of their supplies a new life!

My first swap. A few years back in October I wrote that I had to head to the garage "to dust off the cobwebs from my Halloween stash of artificial cobwebs". This is a good excuse to dig into the (not-so-dusty) craft stash and make it useful to someone! http://funasyoumakeit.blogspot.com/

kingsalami 04/ 7/2010 #

my wife has given me a ton of crap to get rid of. Let the destashing begin!

honeysucklehandmades 04/ 9/2010 #

I'm excited to participate, but I have no ratings... I participated in one other swap, but my partner hasn't logged on to rate me :( Am I still able to participate? It will be worth it to my partner, promise!

Momwithahook 04/12/2010 #

Excited about this challenge but also didn't realize how often I purchase craft supplies... oy vay! Anyway, I took the pledge blog and I'm also writing up a piece for a craft challenge I'm participating in for ChristyNelson.net Yippee

racheljohnson 04/12/2010 #

Absolutely, @honeysucklehandmades - as long as you are enthusiastic about swapping, you are welcome to join!

arielrobin 04/17/2010 #

Sadly, I bought a bunch of junk this morning...and last week...and the week before so I can't take the April Stash Bust Challenge but I will join the swap anyway. :)

arielrobin 04/18/2010 #

does it have to be an envelope or can the stuff be sent in a box?

kayleena 04/18/2010 #

just have a question about the stash part of things. If I say have a few sticker sheets with a couple of stickers missing but I don't want to use the rest is classified as destashing, or tacky?

craftbunny 04/19/2010 #

weeeee, let's goooooooooo......here is my blog link

kallie1978 04/20/2010 #

kayleena - not tacky to me, any stickers are better than no stickers at all!

arielrobin 04/20/2010 #

kayleena - not tacky to me either. i have some sheets of stickers that I used a couple of that i had planned on sending as well.

rhinoluvr 04/22/2010 #

This is great!! We can get rid of things we aren't using and get fresh things without spending money on more packaging, etc. I know I have more than I know what to do with. I can't wait to stuff an envelope. I may even find something in my stash I didn't know I had! I also think sticker sheets with some missing would be A-OK. Happy crafting with your new-to-you items!

kellylynn9 04/22/2010 #

I love all this idea and sometimes think I should do this a lot more often! Especially when I look around at everything that is here!! This is a wonderful idea! http://kellysplace2play.blogspot.com/

Thank you so much for joining the April Stash Bust craft supply swap! It is a huge swap with 137 participants. I love it! I am especially excited because there are a bunch of new Swap-bot users in the swap. Welcome, new members! Remember to fill out your profile pages so that other users can learn more about you.

Partners have now been assigned! FYI: You must be logged into Swap-bot to get your partner info. Click on the "See the partners you send to" link in the upper right corner of this page and a pop-up window with the address info will appear.

I am really excited to send out my envelope full of craft supplies! I need to bust my stash! Remember, your envelope must be at least 6 x 9 inches in size, but bigger envelopes or boxes are totally allowed. Also, I will angel this swap if you do not receive a pack from your partner. Simply contact me a few weeks after the mail deadline if you haven't received anything.

Thanks for swapping with Swap-bot! xoxo

DarbyFlats 04/24/2010 #

@bysaralynn is the person I'm supposed to receive from. It appears I'm going to be flaked on.

DarbyFlats 04/24/2010 #

@bysaralynn just informed me that she will not be flaking! :)

YEAH!!!!

craftysmurfette 04/26/2010 #

I went the shoebox route...and it felt good to pass part of my crafty-hoarder-stash along to someone else to enjoy! Hooray for Swap-bot :)

Artistic 04/26/2010 #

A package is en route to my partner from Virginia. It's coming Parcel Post with Delivery Confirmation. Enjoy!

lilusa 04/30/2010 #

I'm sending a box slightly smaller than the requirements (8-5/8" x 5-3/8" x 1-5/8"). I hope this is okay!

MissMakesALot 05/ 4/2010 #

i didnt get my swap yet, i hope my partner isnt a flaker :(

pattybot 05/ 5/2010 #

I love this swap! I got my envelope and I am so inspired! When I went through my "house of crafts"...I found so many things that might interest my assigned partner, that I sent her a box...I'm mailing from Germany to Canada...I can't wait to hear what she thinks when she gets it. :)

casj62 05/ 7/2010 #

I got nothing YET...does it take awhile??

Stash is a great way to get your hands dirty framed game and make a few extra dollars. You can pick up supplies at thrift stores, garage sales, and flea markets. You can also buy them online.
