Description:

If you are addicted to the art-o-mat but aren't lucky enough to have access to one here is your chance create art-o-mat style pieces yourself to swap with other addicts!

(Just see www.art-o-mat.org if you are unfamiliar with the machines!)

We will each have two(2) partners and will send one(1) art-o-mat sized piece to each that we have created.

The pieces are small (see important size details below) and the swap is international.

Since art-o-mat is an example of one's best artwork (and this should be too!) it will be sender's choice.

Art-o-mat pieces can range from paintings, drawings, zines, small books, printmaking, quilts, small sculptures, cast pewter etc. (I've also seen soap and jewelry but please tailor these to your recipient as some people have allergies and metal sensitivities.)

SIZE DETAILS--

You need to follow the rules for art-o-mat pieces which are designed to be vended through refurbished cigarette machines.

Instructions/guidelines can be found at http://www.artomat.org/guidelines.html and yes, final pieces (or the outer box) should be 2 1/8" x 3 1/4" x 7/8" (54mm x 82mm x 21mm). I know the dimensions are daunting but please do your best. I don't think anyone will mark you down for being off an eighth of an inch!

The easiest solution is probably the handy box template that you can make with cardstock--http://www.artomat.org/box_template.pdf

The acetate covering required by art-o-mat is optional.

(Please do not use an old cigarette box due to the tobacco smell. Thanks!)

Please don't sign up unless you will follow through. Please have an great record and a minimum of 5 rated package (type 3) swaps. No flakiness because it just isn't fun for anyone. I will check profiles before assigning partners.

Just PM with any questions!

There is also a swap for vended art-o-mat pieces (that you buy from a machine rather than create). http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/56417

I've never heard of these. How fabulous.

This is great. I have sold jewelry and paintings for the last few years in art-o-mats and have quite a stash here.

YAY!! Thanks for setting this up!! I'm so excited about this!

You're welcome! I'm glad there is interest and can't wait to see what everyone creates!

Someone wrote me directly and asked about the art-o-mat requirement that pieces be wrapped (in the middle) with acetate. They do this to protect the artwork as it is vended from the machine. Since some folks will have limited access to the material I'll leave that up to you. It's an authentic touch but I'd rather have folks spend the time creating rather than searching for acetate if it's a challenge, so it's not required. Just let me know if there are any other questions. Best, M.

Wow - I'd never heard of Art-o-mat before, but it's an awesome concept, and a brilliant idea for a swap. Thanks for hosting! :-)

this is really awesome!

MissThundercat 03/29/2010 #

question about the acetate, is it similar to clear cellophane wrap, just sturdier?

fieldstudio31 03/31/2010 #

Hello. Partners have been assigned. If you have any questions or difficulties completing your pieces please just PM me. (Also if you do not receive your pieces please let me know. I will be prepared to help & angel if needed.) Best, M.

Acetate is a thin plastic sheet--like thin, clear paper. I'd compare it more to overhead plastic than to cellophane. Again, no worries--it's not a requirement for this swap!

When I printed out the box template from the Art-o-mat website, it was about a quarter inch too small on each side. I don't know if it's just me (I'm in Australia and we use metric page sizes). Did anyone else find this?

fieldstudio31 04/ 8/2010 #

I printed out and checked twice. It seems OK here. Just do your best and thanks for being so thorough. Maybe it's the conversion that's wonky. If folks create in good faith and are off by a tiny bit it's okay.

No worries...I will figure something out, thanks for checking :-)

Hope all is well with the last minute art-o-mat creations. If there are any pressing questions or need for help just send me a PM!

BuniGrrl 04/17/2010 #

Not a pressing question, but I would love to see what everyone else is making ... is there a way to post pics here or on a forum thread?

MissThundercat 04/28/2010 #

I also would love to see what people made :) I uploaded mine at my flickr! It's so fun to see the different idea's people come up with :)
