Description:

For everybody who would like to make a string/strip quilt:

Cut 12 random strips of fabric 2"-3" by WOF (width of fabric).

Please use 100% cotton pre-washed prints - no solids (tonal prints are ok).

Send 6 strips each to 2 partners.

Please post a comment below if you would like to request a specific colorway for your strips: i.e. all blues, all cool colors, multicolors, blacks and whites only, etc.

This swap is for those swappers rated 4.9 or higher and is newbie-friendly to those with a nicely filled-out profile. If anybody wants to participate who does not fit these qualifications, please PM me. I will angel this swap, so please PM me if there are any problems.

Let's start strippin'! (Pun intended) :-)

Sender's choice is fine by me!

For quilting I always tear my fabric to ensure it's on-grain. Is that alright? Or must it be cut?

alysowl 03/ 8/2010 #

Torn or cut is fine by me. (I don't even really care if it's completely straight or not, but some might). If things like that matter to the eventual recipients, please make sure to comment here.

What a great idea alysowl, count me in!

perkl8r 03/ 8/2010 #

Oh, I forgot to say, I'd like anything except plaids and skulls. thanks

lcove2000 03/ 8/2010 #

Will there be any directions on what to do with these strips after we send them?

PerkyGiraffe 03/ 9/2010 #

Great idea!!! For whomever gets me as a partner, I'm starting to work on a quilt for my Mother that will be a sort of maroon/gold theme, so maybe that's something to go on? Otherwise, I love SUPER bright/funky damask and stuff like that. I'd prefer no country specific stuff, and I agree with the no skulls either comment! :) What a great way to work on the fabric stash! Also, 2 1/2"+ would be preferable (2 1/2" strips is usually what I work with)!

Thanks, perkl8r, but I can't take credit for this - it was pathacker's idea. I'm just helping! :-)

lcove2000 - It seems like so many people use strips to make string quilts, log cabin quilts, etc., that it didn't occur to me to provide directions for anything. Strips are so VERY versatile! One of my favorite strip quilt ideas is here: http://quiltville.com/spiderweb.shtml.

black and white print only

lcove2000 03/10/2010 #

That's absolutely beautiful. I am new to quilting and it looks a little complicated for me. Any simpler ideas? Thanks in advance.

lcove2000 - Here are a few more tutorials for strip quilts:

http://magnoliabayquilts.blogspot.com/2010/01/string-blocks-tutorial.html http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatternsprojects/ss/string_piecing.htm http://www.filminthefridge.com/2009/04/27/a-string-quilt-block-tutorial-paper-pieced-method/

A simple search on flickr will also turn up hundreds of GORGEOUS photos of string quilt projects. I hope this helps. :-)

i would like either lighter shades or darker shades of fabric...hint...if you squint your eyes while looking at fabric, it helps to tell if they are lighter or darker...medium shades wont give the same effect in the quilt that i am working on...any colors. thanks so much!

beenieb333 03/13/2010 #

oh i forgot...can i have mine cut 2 1/2 in. please?

twobluecrows 03/19/2010 #

Bummer! This looks fun, but the WOF thing is stopping me--I don't have any fabric that's the original bolt width--I bought 1/4 yds and fat quarters for all the recent block swaps, and nothing is wider than a fat quarter any more! Would anyone like to do a private swap for more but shorter strips? 18" or so long, and 1" -2" wide?

alysowl 03/22/2010 #

Sure! They're all going to get cut shorter anyway. ;-)

beenieb333 03/22/2010 #

i finished the light and dark quilt top...now i am addicted to heart string blocks...so any colors any shades are great with me...i am thinking this next quilt will be multi colored with an emphasis in purple...so far thats what the blocks are coming out like. any width...scratch my last comments...thanks!

mariaisabel 03/22/2010 #

To my partners: Im in need of these colors: light blues yellows greens browns fushia If you dont have any of these colors its OK Im happy with whatever I receive. Ohh and any shade and combination is ok, especially if it has any of those colors.

twobluecrows 03/22/2010 #

Lucky me! I had to go to JoAnn's for some thread and they had a big sale on the quilt fabrics, so I got ten 1/4 yds--now I can play with strips and WOF!

I'm joining-- I like all colors except pink for my string quilt. Please don't send me pinks!

PerkyGiraffe 03/23/2010 #

Just a note if this makes things easier, I'm also going to start a couple of blue quilts soon, as well as one huge red/black/white quilt - so maybe that will open up some options for those sending to me! :)
