Description:

Many of you may have already tried this technique, but I wanted our first tutorial to be simple. Make a batch of STRONG coffee, think espresso, or tea. Four bags per cup is a good start. Let cool. Pour liquid of choice into a shallow container. Add paper tags. The tags for this swap should be roughly 2"x 5" or 5.08 x 12 cm. and made of heavier paper like cardstock so they don't disintegrate. Let tags soak until you like the color.

Remember you can experiment with different colors of paper. When the desired color is reached dry tags in the oven set on warm or about 200 degrees or 94 celsius. WATCH CAREFULLY. You can also dye string, ribbon or fabric in the liquid. When dry remove tags from oven, let cool. You can carefully iron them if they are too wrinkled, but the texture can look really cool.

You may decorate your tag with images, stamps etc. IF you choose. NOT required!

Next, add at least one yard of ribbon, lace, rick rack, a pretty strip of fabric etc. Can be a mix, if you choose. Add ONE bling piece. A vintage earring, chandelier crystal, a pin, any pretty "extra." That's it. Remember flavored coffee and teas will give your tags a lovely scent. Herb teas such as raspberry, will be a pretty pink. Senders choice, BUT please don't use a scent your partner hates or is allergic to. If they hate cinnamon, or are allergic to peach, don't use it.

One decorated tag and two any size blank tags.(Must be dyed) to one partner, 3 tags total. Any question please ask!!

Ooooh, I love these! I love them so much I actually made a copy of that Somerset Life magazine page for inspiration and made several of them, then mounted three of them on half a collaged Scrabble board and added a hanger. You can do so much with these and they're so much fun to do!

Great idea to do a tutorial! Kinda like bringing the magazine to life...Somerset Life :) Can't wait to try this technique. thx!!

I am very excited about this swap! I am actually going to try doing this for the first time tonight but with doilies. Just bought three old doilies at Goodwill to try it with (saw the idea once in Country Living Magazine). I am in on this one!

CraftyAnnie 01/11/2010 #

Oh boy, I'm in! Sounds so much fun, you are a gem Jody! :)

Tarabell150 01/12/2010 #

It worked! I tried it with tags and doilies and it turned out great! Very excited!

Okay, I have a question: the trim (ribbon or rick rack) we are adding: Is it for decorative purposes or is it so our partner has something to add to their stash?

homeandheart 01/13/2010 #

Good question @grimmlynn it's to add to there stash! Feel free to use it as a decorative if you want. I can send you an e-mail too if you need to, @CraftyAnnie I will try to make your link click

here

blynken 01/13/2010 #

Great! Would love to try this! Can I sun-dry the tags or use a heat gun instead of baking them?

grimmlynn 01/14/2010 #

Clicky Link @CraftyAnnie mentioned.

CraftyAnnie 01/14/2010 #

THANKS to @homeandheart and @grimmlynn for providing a click-able link to the blog. She has a great blog, don't forget to look back at some of her older posts!

CraftyAnnie 01/14/2010 #

(Oh, & her etsy store. She has some really, really pretty things in it!!!)

homeandheart 01/15/2010 #

@blynken You may dry them however you feel most comfortable!

grimmlynn 01/16/2010 #

I didn't see where you made a clicky link, too @homeandheart ..oops! I am off to test a batch of tags and see how it works out before I join. :-)

Tarabell150 01/16/2010 #

Can wine be used for this perhaps? I tried that tonight and the tags turned out very gorgeous. If this is just for tea and coffee stained tags, wine would be another good swap to do.

grimmlynn 01/17/2010 #

Wine- what a great idea. I will just hang some times around my neck and not only will I not have to get stain remover after my shirt, but I will have a neatly decorated tag, too!

homeandheart 01/19/2010 #

@Tarabell The new Somerset Life has other natural dyes, like wine, berries etc. I will set up another swap later, it's a wonderful idea! Since this is a coffee/tea tutorial, let's leave it as that this time, okay? Thank you so much!!

CarrieZee 01/24/2010 #

I love this idea!! I made dyed some this morning and dried them with my embossing tool. I wonder if it would work to emboss and image first and then dye the tag. I may try that today, too, since I have all this leftover coffee. :)

homeandheart 01/26/2010 #

Great idea!!! @CarrieZee

threesweetpeas 02/15/2010 #

ooh bummer i missed it, if it runs again i am in!!!

CollageCafe04 02/17/2010 #

ok... this is my first swap as part of this wonderful group & I want to be sure I do this right, so please help a newbie out... I get that it's 3 tags total, 1 decorated, 2 plain, but I'm a little confused on the other things listed... (lace, ribbon, bling.... ) is that to include in the package or to use on the decorated tag?

thanks in advance.... ...scatter joy...

debbiesw 02/20/2010 #

Drat missed this swop, Will defo be in the next one if you run another.

SummerGypsy 02/22/2010 #
