Hello: Are there really 8-1/2 by 11-inch envelopes? Standard sheets of US paper measure that but generally office envelopes start at 9 by 11 inches, don't they? Are you, perhaps, referring to the somewhat larger Priority Mail flat-rate mailing envelope? Those cardboard mailers offer space and protection for the Priority Rate of $4.95 (I think that's the rate all over the country). A person can fit an awfully lot of flat stuff into such an envelope.

Here's what the USPS has to say: "Envelope size: 9-1/2 X 12-1/2 inches. One low price for any mailable item sent in a flat-rate envelope provided by the Postal Service, regardless of weight or U.S. destination."

"When sealing a flat-rate envelope, the container flaps must be able to close within the normal folds. Tape may be applied to the flaps and seams to reinforce the container; provided the design of the container is not enlarged by opening the sides and the container is not reconstructed in any way."

I meant an 8.5" x 11" bubble envelope.
