Description:

This is pretty simple, but may require a drive across town, or a dip into your souveniers. I'm setting a lengthy sign-up period to allow for those final end-of-summer trips. What you'll send to your partner is a store-bought postcard from your destination, and an elongated penny from the same location. This will be fairly inexpensive, because most elongated penny machines only charge 50 cents, plus the penny you squish. PLEASE USE PENNIES MINTED 1981 OR EARLIER for the copper content. The images will be clearer and shine up better. Because you're sending an elongated penny as well as a postcard, you'll probably send both in an envelope, but feel free to write a note on the postcard about the place you visited (unless your partner requests a pristene postcard).

Not sure where to find a penny-squishing machine in your area? Check out www.pennycollector.com, and click on "Machine Locations" at the bottom of the page. You may be surprised to find there are several machines in your town!

Because I've been flaked on, and I know it's no fun, I'm going to limit the swap to folks who have an average rating of 4.75 or above, and no recent no-sends.

I look forward to swapping with you!

this sounds like fun, but the place I can get squished pennies doesn't sell postcards :(

jnolan, Is that place included in a different postcard, say a view of the city? The penny could be the specific place, and the postcard could feature the place in the skyline of the city. Are any of the featured designs (available on that machine) other places or things that ARE on postcards? Some machines feature a variety of designs, including other local landmarks that may be featured in postcards of your city! Also, some owners change the designs on their machines periodically, so there may be a new penny design that features a postcard attraction since you visited last. Perhaps it's worth a phonecall to the machine location? SpeechieGirl

I have looked at that list of places you can get a penny squished and there's like none or only one place in Arkansas. I am going to Houston in fall, but not sure it would be in time for this swap. Will keep it on my watchlist though.

The pressed penny machine is in our museum. The museum is not featured on any postcards. Actually, my city doesn't sell postcards I have to travel at least 30 minutes to another city to get mine.

Great idea! I just found out that there is a penny-squishing machine at a place I walk by every day on my way to work. I can't wait to go in and try it out.

jnolan: I know what you mean. I'll probably have a 45 minute drive myself. That's why I gave the long lead-time. I hope I'll be headed that direction for something else in the next few weeks so I can combine trips. Perhaps the same will happen for you, and you can join us after all!

moxsapphir: I hope you get your trip to Houston in before the deadline. If not, I hope you'll squish an extra penny, and buy an extra postcard. Perhaps we'll do this again!

This is a creative swap, SpeechieGirl. I'm very excited. I'll likely do a set from my hometown (of NYC) or something from my upcoming travels to North Carolina.

Ystarr: Welcome! I'm glad you joined in!

Oh, good - I just came back from holidays and bought 2 pennies at some places so I could swap them. Since I usually buy postcards, too, I'm sure I'll have a couple that go together.

I can't wait for this swap! I just returned from vacation where I spend $40 smashing pennies not including the pennies!!! If your curious where...it was in Seattle, WA!
