El Dia De Los Muertos History

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos ) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on the 31st of October to the 2nd of November. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Scholars trace the origins of the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years, and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl.

  • 3 Items I would like:
  1. Anything Frida Kahlo

  2. A cute little skelly

  3. A shrine to memorialize a famous Mexican icon. (Luchadores would be cool)

curlygirl 04/28/2009 #

Wow - what a great idea to start so early! I really don't want to limit the creativity of my partner, but I love the idea of a shrine or idea to make a shrine...as I have never made or received one. Also I absolutely love Frida...but really just want to be surprised!

HoneyBunny 05/ 5/2009 #

I will be celabrating this holiday with my boys this year. We missed it last year even though I bought all the supplise to do the sugar skulls. I will be creating an alter so anything that can go with that or decor will be greatly appreciated. I love DDM so anything related to the holiday is great. Thanks so much!

motes 07/26/2009 #

I'm really excited about this swap! Like curlygirl said, I don't want to limit the creativity of my partner! I love shrines, all things Frida, and I do have pierced ears so earrings are OK. Sugar skulls--all things skulls--are great--and I'm just excited to see what things my partner surprises me with!

LittleCakes 08/ 2/2009 #

Crafty Senorita...your swaps always rock!! This is so great! Looking forward to putting together a fabulous package for someone!!! I love everything on the list so who ever gets me...I enjoy it all...jewelry, shrines, frida, skellies...surprise me!

CraftySenorita 08/ 4/2009 #

Thank you for joining LittleCakes. I think this swap will be a lot of fun. They're already starting to put the Halloween stuff out where I live.

ChinaCat 08/ 9/2009 #

I would LOVE to join this swap, but I'm a newbie with little chance of accumulating the requirements in time. But next year, I'm so in!

CraftySenorita, any chance you might host another DD swap (maybe on a smaller scale?) and allow newbies to join? I live in Tucson and I'm well acquainted with DD and also, this area has lots of Mexican import stores to find stuff. Heck, I could take a drive to Nogales and poke around there for Day of the Dead items. Anyway, I'll be looking for an awesome DD swap to join!

hayleylouisabrown 08/19/2009 #

wish this was international! i love dia de los muertos but i'm in the UK :(

CraftySenorita 08/24/2009 #

Oh I'm so sorry. US postage is so darn expensive. Maybe someone will start one just for the UK.

curlygirl 08/26/2009 #

FYI - If anyone is looking for materials, there is a lot of cool digital art on Etsy you can use to make great stuff for DOD!

Ogma 09/10/2009 #

I am not able to craft right now. Would it be okay if all my items were store bought? If so, I'd love to join up. Thanks!

CraftySenorita 09/14/2009 #

Yes, all of your items can be store bought

Ogma 09/15/2009 #

Thanks. :-)

Cupcakexcore 09/28/2009 #

I would love Sugar skull molds and figures/Papier Mache, clay or wooden skellies. I also sew, which means if you found a yard of DOD material I would love you forever as I cannot find any! I am not religious so please not to much on the Guadalupe or any saint please. THANK YOU TO MY PARTNER!!! hugs!
