I've never seen a swap like this on here, so I thought I'd give it a try.

This swap is for handmade God's Eye Weavings.

The Ojo de Dios, or God's Eye, is a simple weaving made across two sticks and is thought to have originated with the Huichol Indians of Jalisco, Mexico.

Here are a some sites with history of this weaving and instructions:

http://www.e-scoutcraft.com/string/eyeofgod.html

http://www.caron-net.com/kidfiles/kidsapr.html

http://www.christiancrafters.com/craft_godseye.html

You will have TWO partners and make them ONE handmade weaving each.

A good size for them will be about 3 to 5 inches. Color is your choice, or check your partners profile if you'd like to use colors they like. Decorate or adorn as you envision your God's Eye should be.

PLEASE BE AWARE if your partner is International - you will NOT be permitted to send WOOD to some countries - New Zealand and Australia are two that I know of for sure that cannot receive items made from wood. In this case, you could use plastic toothpicks or swizzle sticks or something along those lines. Just please don't chance it and send wood, as I'd hate to see your hard work confiscated by customs.

This swap is for swappers with a rating of 4.9 or higher, at least 3 rated crafty swaps (mailed swaps), and no swaps outstanding more than 7 days at the close of the signup period. Your account must be active, meaning you've signed in during the week before the close of the signup period. I will be looking carefully at any "ones" or "threes" on your account.

If you see that there are questionable swappers signed up for this swap, please let me know.

Oh, this is really cool!!! I've never heard of this before, but I'm definately in!!! The website says that they would make these when a child was born and then add another eye every year until the child is 5. Does anyone know how they add another eye? Do they mean to sew another eye shaped section into the work or is it adding around the edge? Guess I'm a little confused, lol

Check out this sight for a sample of the added eyes:

Seems to me it resembles a whole family tree.

I lived in Mexico for many years (though never in the Huichol areas), so I can't not sign up!

I am dropping and moving this over to my watch for right now so I can do a couple of private postcard swaps. Don't worry, I will definately get signed up again before the deadline. This is too cool to miss out on:))

Oh yes, that's the site that has it for $1500.....WOAH!!! Omg...wouldn't it be nice to be able to make them and sell them for that much? lol

These are so pretty and so simple. We did these one year at a girl scout event with the older girls helping the younger girls for leadership badges and they loved it. You can use more than two sticks, and get very complicated with textured yarns and they really are works of art. How fun...

Has anyone tried these with craft "popsicle" sticks? My daughter has a box and I was gonna try it but thought I would ask 1st, how it turned out? Or do they need to be thin sticks?

I've done tit with popsicle sticks and it works fine. You can add additional sticks to get a different effect. Pretty cool. We decorated our Christmas tree with these one year. Very pretty!

These are awesome! Thanks Carol it did work great, I think I am gonna try the additional sticks to see how it goes!

I remember making my first one of these when I was in the 4th grade. We called them dreamcatchers though and we made them out of straws and I had the most awesome rainbow yarn and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. lol I was gonna take a break from swapping, but I have such fond memories...gonna watch for right now.

Oohh I won't have done 3 crafty swaps as I'm a bit of a newbie but hopefully you'll do another one of these great swaps soon.

grannylove60 03/24/2009 #

Oh well, I moved this one to my watch and forgot about it...heck!!! I hope you do another one of these swaps so hopefully I'll catch the next round. In the meantime, I'm going to try to make one to get the hang of it:)
