Description:

Fold yourself some happy mail! In this swap you will write a one page letter on approximately 8.5" x 11" or A4 paper. Only write your letter on one side of the sheet! This will be just a quick penpal introduction.

Once your letter is written, follow these directions to fold your paper into its own envelope: https://www.instructables.com/Envelope-free-letter-sending-Snail-Mail-origami/

Video directions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKJBLVVZ0h0

I recommend practicing this technique on spare paper to get the hang of it before you fold the letter you write.

You can add a bit of tape where the flaps fold under in order to secure it a bit more for mailing. Address the blank side, put $0.75 postage on it (for the US anyway), and send it on its way!

UPDATE per a question from carrotkate: if you know a different fold for this purpose, feel free to use it! The finished folded letter should be at least 3.5" x 5" in order to be eligible for sending through the mail.

This swap is international since postage will be cheap-ish, and it is newbie friendly. (Please have a thoroughly filled out profile so your partner can strike up a conversation about your interests.) Rate a five if you receive a letter that meets the requirements in a timely fashion. I am happy to angel, but please remember that the postal service is running way behind right now and allow plenty of time for delivery.

@saellys - is it okay to use store-bought postalettes for this? Or are you looking for DIY folding craftiness? And does it have to be that exact fold? Thanks! :)

@carrotkate - thanks for the questions! For the purposes of this swap it does need to be DIY folded. The paper you use can certainly be fancy stationery though!

I picked that fold because the finished result from an A4/letter size sheet of paper is large enough to mail, unlike the other folds I've found, but if you know a different one that gets you a finished piece that is at least 3.5" x 5" in size and will be secure enough to mail, I say go for it! I'll update the description to reflect that.

@saellys For the German Post a standard letter must have rectangular shape. This might be the case in other countries too. The first fold version shown in this video seems to be mailable size or could probably be adjusted in measurement.

Note that, in the US, this fold results in an 'odd shaped envelope' and will require $0.70 in postage.

Oops! Rates just went up $0.75

Since I assigned partners late, I have edited this swap to extend the mailing deadline. Also added the updated postal rate information. Happy swapping!
