Description: | |
DĂa de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of loved ones who have passed. While the holiday originated in Mexico, it is celebrated all over Latin America with colorful calaveras (skulls) and calacas (skeletons). Those celebrating the holiday create altars, place photos, light candles and make food and other offerings to the spirits of their ancestors and loved ones. While many Americans are familiar with and incorporate sugar skulls and Day of the Dead traditions into their Halloween celebrations, they are different holidays. Day of the Dead spans from Oct 31st to Nov 2nd this year. For this swap, I want participants to explore how Day of the Dead is different from Halloween. You will send one partner a flat package or card that will include a notecard with a note inside describing a loved one you’ve lost and would like to honor during this celebration. You will also include 1-3 Day of the Dead / sugar skull-themed items such as stickers, cards, cut outs or any other paper or stationary items or whatever you see fit. This is sender’s choice. If you’re interested in learning more about Day of the Dead, many cities have local celebrations (this year, many are online). If you haven’t seen it, the animated Disney Pixar movie Coco is a beautiful film about this celebration. I highly encourage everyone to watch it. This is USA only due to the tight time frame before the holiday. Not the quick turn around between the sign up date and send date. No recent 1s or 3s. I will angel. |
