Dear Ladies, Pam had the lovely idea of making a home book to fill with all the necessary receipts a household needs. Things included in a home book may be cooking recipes, household hints, remedies, cleaning recipes and other useful information for running a household. Jane and I thought to make this a nice progressive swap where we would exchange signatures periodically until we have several and can put them all together in a cover. By making one signature at a time, we thought it could be tucked into your journal for safe keeping and when we have, say, four signatures we could then bind them. This swap is open to all members, whether you have a character or not and you are welcome to make your signatures into something other than a home book, it is your choice. By swapping signatures we will have a diverse book with inspiration from several others. So, for this swap, please make one signature which consists of three sheets of paper folded in half and sewn at the crease. The size of the paper will be 10” length by 6” height which will give a nice sized little “booklet” when folded and get around the issue of the different sized papers from country to country. Embellish the pages as you would for a junk journal, perhaps using tea or coffee stained paper and adding little pockets, tags or belly bands for tucking things behind. Try to make your signature in keeping with our time period, utilizing colours and patterns of the time. We will have one partner for this swap to whom we will send our completed signature and a short note, in character if you are so inclined, adding the name of the swap and your swap name as well. I'm a bit confused, in the signature we're making, do we add different subjects. and leave areas for our partner to add there own ideas?

Oh and does the signature need a cardstock cover to protect the pages? Or perhaps a sturdy envelope could protect the pages?...I will have to watch some videos as this is newer skill for me.

Well, the videos answered the signature cover question, so please diaregard; I see that we can use a paper bag or card stock for outside cover of signature. Also, with the sewing, is it okay if we hand sew the signatures with three holes and thread? I don't have a sewing machine and this is the method I know from watching other YouTube videos on making junk journals. I think this will be a lot of fun. I can't wait to see who my partner is so I can begin working on the signature.

Pam, the Signature you make should have some light embellishment and spaces for writing recipes or journal entries. There can be pockets to tuck things, tags to write on and perhaps a belly band to slip things behind or an envelope to keep things in. Just as long as there is room for the recipient to record things whether they are making a home book or just a junk journal out of the signatures they will receive.

Sewing by hand is perfectly fine, Elena.

Elena, signatures are generally the bare pages (in our case lightly embellished) in simple booklet form, so there is no need for a cover of any kind. The next time we swap again, we will receive another signature, over the next few swaps we ought to have 4 little booklet signatures. THEN we will hand stitch them as in regular book of this kind, & cover as in a regular book receives a sturdy cover. Coptic binding allows the pages to open fully but that is another story when the time to cover comes. Hope that is alright to say Anna, xjane

Dear ladies, Elena found this alternative to stitching binding, a twine binding signature. Link above is a wonderful easy way to present your signatures for those with arthritic or hand stitching binding problems or simply no time to spare to spend, but would love to be in the swap. The result is attractive, and in keeping with our time period.
