Fat Quarter Sewing Challenge

Sounds like fun! I have this on my watchlist! Does anyone have any ideas/links on things to make? It would be fun to maybe start a thread on the group forum for everyone to choose from or at least get some ideas! :)

Here's a free pattern for a tote bag. It calls for 1 yard of fabric, so you would have to use the fat quarters by sewing them into a larger piece, 35.5" x 43.5". This will be 1/2" smaller on the short side than the pattern calls for, but that will be OK.

Here's another free pattern, however it calls for 5 fat quarters. It's a little more complicated to get the pattern: go just below the picture of the bag and click on the colored "So Sew Easy Schlep Bag." This will download a PDF file.

It is easy to substitute 2 fat quarters for the 1/2 yard they call for.

I love that schlep bag! Some of the things I've thought of: a sewing machine cozy with a matching pincushion/thread catcher, a crochet hook roll (or knitting needle roll), placemats with matching/coordinated napkins. All things I could use! Or you could make the FQs into fabric yarn and crochet/knit something. Not sure if all of these fit into the requirements of 1-4 FQ though. oh, and it says "sew something" so I guess the fabric yarn doesn't quite fit. Or how about a yoga mat bag?

Will put on watchlist while I check these websites. This sounds intriguing:)

Just clarifying, do we use 4 fat quarters or can it be 2 or 3 I have a lot of cute patterns that only require part of a fat quarter

I've not been in any of the Fat Quarter swaps, but I will put this on my Watchlist and give it some thought. The closest fabric store from me is an hour away. :( I have plenty of Fat Quarters and fabric in my stash, however. :) Gaye

Here's a tutorial for a notebook cover. You could easily cut up fat quarters instead of using the 5" charm squares.

Here's a fun one if you're just getting back into sewing like me - though the tutorial shows using 6 colors/patterns, I just made a set with just 3 colors/patterns by making the A square, the C square and two of the B squares the same. They turned out totally cool, check it it out. You'll see what I mean by A, B and C once you see the tutorial.

schlep bag = would work well with resizing to make it fat quarter friendly... 6" squares instead of 8" and you could get it out of 4 FQ.

I'm having fun just checking out blogs for ideas..Maybe if we all have fun we can do this again in the Spring?

Wow I started working on mine and I'm really getting into to it! Whoever my partner is I'm sure will be happy with my project. I can't wait until this swap is finished so we can do it again!
