Description:

I hosted this in Sept/Oct, and I found it to be really, really fun! So I'm going to try again, and hope a few others sign up to go on this journey with us. :) Changing it to a Type 3 swap because there can be quite a bit of writing involved. Join us! :)

Giving a long lead time to think about this swap, and then a month to complete and send it. Maybe too long?? Not profile based, though, so you can work on it ahead of time, if you wish. :)

The swap: This swap will be International, and you will have 1 partner.

My daughter is 16, and has introduced me to the idea of a "fandom". Wikipedia defines fandom as: "Fandom is a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of empathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the object(s) of their fandom and spend a significant portion of their time and energy involved with their interest, often as a part of a social network with particular practices (a fandom); this is what differentiates "fannish" (fandom-affiliated) fans from those with only a casual interest."

In my time here on swap-bot, I've noticed many people really "into" their chosen book genre, author, series, etc. I'll admit, I don't understand some of it, but it can be fun. So I thought it would be nice to share. :) Maybe you'll find a new pal to discuss the fandom about! :) If you aren't currently part of a fandom, that's ok. You can still join in and talk about your favorite book or series or author, and why you enjoy it, how often you re-read and so on. :)

Send your partner a letter describing your "fandom" - do you have a certain author that you will ALWAYS buy/read?

Is there a series that you just cannot wait for the new book to come out?

Or is there a book or series that you re-visit over and over again?

Do you celebrate events or birthdays spoken about in a book or series?

Or do you share terms and phrases from a book/series you love? (You can answer the above questions or just use them as inspiration.)

EDIT 11/16: You do not have to limit yourself to just one topic of your fandom. If you follow many series/shows, please feel free to talk about several topics rather than just one. :)

In a letter to your partner (handwritten or typed, either is fine), "own" your fandom - if it's a book series, identify the series, the titles of the books, author, the genre. Talk a bit about what it's all about. Introduce "your precious" to your partner.

(Ideally this should be about a BOOK series, but if you are a Whovian or other TV/movie fan, you can also write about that. Or if you devour anything a certain author writes - cough, cough, Stephen King ... - go for it! Share your admiration and fandom!)

Then go on to talk about what draws you to the book/series. Maybe it's a location, or a character - whatever draws you to it.

Talk about anything you might do to "celebrate" the fandom. Even if it's just re-reading the book every year, that's fine. If you throw a birthday party for a character, talk about that. :)

You can use stationery or plain paper, decorate or not - the written portion of the letter is the goal - everything else is sender's choice. :)

Length of the letter .... I'm not a fan of a minimum page or word count. This is a reading and writing group, so - write! Explore your thoughts and ideas, your feelings.

Any questions? Please PM me directly! I almost always miss questions listed in the comments section.

However! If you are 'watching' this swap, PLEASE leave a comment below so I can see who is interested! Just commenting "watching" is fine - then I can see your ID & know you are interested, ok? :)

Long days and pleasant nights!

watching until I can fully commit to 2019!! And can we talk about multifandoms?!

USAFwife 11/16/2018 #

@CajunLady - sure! I'll edit the swap to reflect the option of talking about multiple fandoms. Thanks for asking! :)

watching, maybe joining :)

So, this is for ANY fandom, no matter how 'into' it you are. I didn't think I was part of a fandom until I sat down to write this swap for round 1 - was I mistaken! haha! And if you want to talk about several different ones, like @CajunLady suggested, you are very welcome to. :)

You're so funny! You say, it should be a book, but you put up a TV show for picture! And also, mine is going to be Doctor Who anyway, because although I could do many book series, I have some nifty Doctor Who stuff I want to send, and I'm currently re-watching the WHOLE thing (well starting with Eccleston) and I'm really really into it right now!

Though, since there's so much time, I could do one for Doctor Who and a whole other one for Harry Potter (books not movies) OR The Dark Tower. Hmm, may do that. But definitely whoever my partner is, they will be learning a LOT about Doctor Who if they don't already know!

And also, that's one of my FAVE memes on the internet EVER!!!

USAFwife 12/21/2018 #

Well, it was originally designed for books, but books and movies/TV overlap sometimes, with fan fic and the like, so everything is welcome, really. :) Besides, the sparkly vampire IS from a book series, so it's all good. Thought I should mix things up and divert away from all Stephen King, all the time.
