Description:

Please join my unusual Mail Art Swap. Go to your Walmart, Dollar Store or Target and find a flat placemat...preferably NOT fabric. Keep the front neat and clear so it can be used by recipient. On the back, treat it like a postcard:

Your name upper left Recipient's name and address in the center/ perhaps in box. Postage up top right. Use regular postage or tape from PO clerk but there is plenty of room for lots of stamps. Pretty simple.

Suggest you use a permanent marker. Feel free to write to recipient in normal message area or all around the outsides. Post Office in USA will honor this format as long as the three requirements are followed.

I once sent pink bunny placemats to kids in spring and kept the front neat for using for food and wiping after eating. It backfired on me cause kids wanted to see their names so ate off the back. I Put an arrow that said start and said I was Peter Cottontail hopping down the bunny trail to their house and wrote all around the whole placemat. Great fun but decided this fun shouldn't just be for kids.

I often sent these at birthdays and for sick friends to cheer them. It is shocking to find these in a mailbox...but wonderful!

Of course this will cost more than a postcard. Please give a five if your arrives on time in your mailbox. Expect comments from Postman. Have fun.

About how much does it cost to send?

USPS says a "large envelope" is max of 12"x15"x 3/4 thick and not rigid. I just measured a standard looking placemat that we have, and it was 17" long, but you may be able to find smaller ones. Large envelopes are $1 for the first ounce, and I'm guessing it would be a couple extra ounces, so about $1.42. Over those dimensions, and it would be a package - these days that would be almost 4 bucks.

This sounds like such a fun swap. I just checked both Target and the Dollar Store and no placemats so guess I will have to skip this time. :(

As hostess I have to say that in the past I have done this without envelope. It would be considered a "flat". I have paid a couple or few dollars but am not sure what it would cost. Weight and distance are taken into account. It looks like a giant postcard but can't be paid for as such. That is why is it regional instead of international. I have found these in Gabe's, Dollar Store, and Big Lots. If you had a big piece of cardboard you could decorate, too. Flimsy things can't go through the mail but I have often glued material or magazine or newspaper pages to a large piece of cardstock for stability. Truthfully, I have sent paper plates through the mail...as is...and they make it unscathed. We shall see if I have any takers by tomorrow night or I will cancel if not. I will try again so watch for "Found Art" swaps too.
