Description:

Did you know that a mother in Africa loses a child to Malaria every 30 seconds? A malaria net costs just £5 and can save the lives of a whole family of children

This is a swap for swappers who are willing to give the cost of one swap (or a few crafting itens) to help others. Here is how it works....

There are several charities who operate an alternative gift project. I list some below but if you know of others please post comments with links to them. You can choose any developmental charity you like with such a scheme.

They work by you giving an online donation in exchange for them sending a person you nominate a card explaining that you have bought them an alternative gift, such as a goat, a fruit tree, an emergency blanket or immunisations for a child. There is a very wide choice. Some charities actually buy the exact item. Others poll the gift money to buy bigger items or to enable them to respond to need. So say if you buy a goat and they have enough goats they might actually buy a sheep. Either way the money goes to someone in need.

The cost depends on what you choose but starts from about £5 so that is all this swap need cost.

  1. Choose a charity you want to support.

  2. Choose a gift you can afford. This is not a competition to show how much spare change you have though - the smallest gift is all that is required and will be a very generous thing to do for someone.

  3. Nominate your swapbot partner to receive the gift.

  4. The charities I have used before allow you to add a message or to personalise the card. If yours does not, wait a little while then send a swap-bot message, email or a postcard so that your partner knows who it was that chose their gift.

It would be wonderful if the swap-bot community coudl really unite on this one so that we can 'swap for good' as it were. So can I ask you, if you are willing to do this that you publicise this swap. Tell your partners in other swaps about it. If you are a hostess perhaps you could add a note on your swaps to come here. If you blog please mention it on your blog.

When you get your gift, lets post a message saying what item you got so that we can all see how much better the word is becuase swappers care about other people and the world.

These charities are both UK and USA based but because you are usng a credit or debit card anyone can participate so this is international. Newbies most welcome and even people with previous no sends becuase even if your partner flakes on you it should not really matter as it is the receipient of the goat rather than the card that is the real winner on this one. (But I have to say flaking out on this one would be really sad!)

as suggested below in commets http://www.heifer.org

Let aim to make this top of the top swaps list.

I am doing a long sign up period so that we can get as many as possible to sign up for it. (And in fact I have just made it longer in response to an email request that I do it after paydays at the beginning of June so that people who have signed up to a lot in April and May may join. I hope this helps.)

Any questions please ask me.

Hi, Helen, This is a wonderful idea. You might want to add Heifer International --

Pink 03/17/2007 #

Excellent idea!

For something a bit different there is the WWF - you can do things like send a turtle to rehab or sending an underpriveledged kid to a nature club! http://www.panda.org/howyoucan_help/gifts/products/index.cfm

PostMuse 03/17/2007 #

Very cool idea! I can't participate right now, but perhaps by May. If everyone put a link to this swap on their blog, there could be some added interest, too. Or add a link to their outgoing email signature. I've bought gifts through Alternative Gifts for years, http://www.altgifts.org, because I can choose secular organizations whereas some of the other organizations are entirely faith-based.

There is another swap going on where you can "be the change you want to see in the world" (Gandhi) at http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/2517 It is more supporting each other's goals than actually donating to a cause, but the person you support today could be tomorrow's Nobel Peace Prize winner.

What a wonderful idea. I'd like to suggest also adding the Heifer Project (http://www.heifer.org/) which promotes a pass it forward policy that enables multiple families to benefit from one gift.

user6670 03/18/2007 #

So to clarify, I would make a donation in my partner's name and then send my partner a card letting them know which organization I donated to?

ukquilter 03/18/2007 #

Katiegrrrl, yes and no!!

the organisation I use most is www.greatgifts.org and with them you can send a gift card which you personalise on the internet which shows the gift you have sent. It is sent to your partner direct by the charity. I think in fact they all do that so that there is actually an alternative gift involved rather than just a charity donation. So you choose the card and the message but do not actually have to post anything. If you want a thankyou before the ratings go up and we find out that way who our sending partner is add your contact details somewhere in the message you personalise or send a seperate swap-bot message.

is that clear or as clear as mud?!

I absolutely adore this swap, and though I can't join it now, I'd love to join it when I have more money. :)

pinkwhirlitop 04/ 4/2007 #

Okay, I have changed my mind. I am joining! :) My charity of choice is WWF - without the environment, what do we have? I love the adopting an animal option, though unfortunately it probably is a little too expensive for this swap (40$ Canadian).

tamipal6 04/29/2007 #

I would like to join this swap! What a great idea! I work for my church and we have recently participated in "The H20 Project" (see http://www.theh2oproject.org/) and the organization we chose was Catholic Relief Services. I see that CRS also has a gift program and I'd like to donate through them. The web address and some info is below:

http://gifts.crs.org/site/PageServer?pagename=gifts_homepage

Gift of Hope (Catholic Relief Services)

Feeding the Poor Building a Better Society Promoting Self-sufficiency Promoting Better Health

Our mission is to alleviate human suffering and promote dignity for all God's children overseas without regard to race, belief, or nationality. Our programs touch the lives of more than 80 million people per year in 99 countries around the world.

http://donate.crs.org/site/PageServer?pagename=mg_donation

I wanted to add this link because the other link for CRS (Catholic Relief Services) gifts were kind of pricy and at the above link you can make a donation of any amount very easily and put it in someone's name.

I just now put the button and description for this on my blog... Sorry I didn't think to do it before now. Hope others will do the same. Surely we can do better than 17 swappers?

I have a question, for us international swappers.

Should we give the exchange rate of £5 ($10 US) or 5 of our own currency? To me, it makes more sense for each swapper to give 5 of their own currency, as their judgment permits. (Someone with a really devalued currency that has the ability to give more should, etc.) If we do strict exchanges, this could get very expensive for the Canadians and South Americans.

AshleyShea 06/ 9/2007 #

Defenders of Wildlife is another organization that helps endangered animals and our environment.

AshleyShea 06/ 9/2007 #

I made my donation today, but the organization will only send certificates within the U.S. I had the certificate sent to me, which I will mail to my partner as soon as it arrives. I'll wait to click "Sent" when I have shipped off the certificate.

zanylady 06/ 9/2007 #

Great concept, Helen. I would have liked to see a lot more participants. Most of us have too much stuff anyway and how wonderful to spread the wealth.

Tamipalo...I made a donation to Save the Children. I usually donate to Heifer.org but decided to do this instead.

For the Canadians, here are a few sites I've found (I haven't used any of these before) --

Plan Canada

World Vision

CHF: Gifts That Matter

Oxfam Canada

SummerLion 06/ 9/2007 #

dephal, I've made a donation in your honor to Heifer International. I'm sending the certificate to you by post.

tamipal6 06/10/2007 #

Thanks for making the donation to Save the Children, Marlene!

tamipal6 06/10/2007 #

Juliet:

I donated to CRS Fair Trade Fund in your honor. This is a program that helps farmers and farm workers to receive a fair price/wage for their products and for their work. Among many other benefits, it also means that children may not have to work and will be able to go to school. :)

user8813 06/11/2007 #

Helen,

I think this is a wonderful swap -- I think you should have a sequel!

user8813 06/11/2007 #

Angela -- I made a donation to Orphanage Outreach in your name. They didn't ask me your address, so I expect you'll be receiving something in your email. :o)

sarrah2 06/11/2007 #

Please start another one when this one is finished. Thank you for having this one.

user7449 06/12/2007 #

Helen,

I've bought some textbooks for children from Oxfam in your name. I believe you will receive a card in the mail shortly along with a little extra! :)

Suzanne 06/12/2007 #

Juliet donated to Plan Canada in my name. Let me just say I squealed. What a cool place to donate!

Thanks, Juliet.

user8813 06/14/2007 #

Beverly donated seedlings to Heifer International in my name - I think that's a wonderful gesture, and a gift that will really keep on giving to so many as they grow and mature into trees!

todsahonchik 06/17/2007 #

I donated to Maggie H. clean water for 25 people and school dinners for 100 children from oxfam international. What a great swap... I'd like to see this again!! I hope more people will join next time.

Suzanne 06/17/2007 #
