Description:

This swap is INTERNATIONAL (and my first swap as coordinator, so thanks for your patience!).

For some reason I have been fascinated with granny-squares lately. I think they are the perfect destiny for acrylic yarn. Since I have been secretly dreaming of a granny-square afghan for myself I started making squares. I am trying to use up old acrylic yarn I have, but my color pallete is very limited. So why not swap some squares to mix it up!

In this swap you make 3 granny squares, and send one to three different partners (so you will send and receive 3 squares). The squares should be made out of a durable, washable acrylic yarn. Just use some scraps that you have lying around. The finished square should measure 6 inches on each side. No need to add an additional edging, the new owner can edge as they like to incorporate it into their own afghan. Make sure to use at least two colors of yarn in each individual square.

I will be filtering out partipants with ratings of less than 4, but will allow newbies with completed profiles to participate.

See the external swap page (link above) if you are looking for granny square resources.

Hi, is this swap International?

aquariusmoon 02/25/2007 #

Does it have to be a traditional granny square like the one pictured?

girlontherocks 02/26/2007 #

Oh - good questions! Yes this swap is international. I was thikning maybe we could start with the traditional granny squares and then have another swap for the more complicated/detailed kinds. What do you think?

girlontherocks 02/26/2007 #

I am so excited that someone signed up! We have the minimum number needed for the swap :) I was worried that no one would sign up.

jannikinz 02/26/2007 #

My kind of swap...I'm in.

aquariusmoon 02/27/2007 #

I think traditional granny squares are just fine for this one, and I'll be happy to sign up for your non-traditional one in the future. Thanks!

user4736 03/ 1/2007 #

OH yippie a use for those acrylic scraps I have been finding as I clean up making room for my new wheel :) Can I join? I have only been in two swaps so far and am not rated....

girlontherocks 03/ 1/2007 #

You are welcome to join us dorothy.

Hi! This sounds like fun! I needed something to do with all of my acrylic yarn and I love making the granny squares! They are the first thing my Great Grandmother taught me to crochet! I hope you'll do this more than once so that we can get a "whole bunch" of granny squares from different places!

user5628 03/ 1/2007 #

I agree Sandy, definitely need to do this more than once. It is such a great way to use up scraps. I have close to fifty squares waiting for new homes, so a monthly swap would help rehome some of them. It will be great to get some new ones too, I am in need of a new afghan and one made with squares from swaps would make it just that little bit more warmer.

user6682 03/ 2/2007 #

Hey, I'm new here, and I like your idea, so I'm signing up! I thought about this a few days ago, but didn't know how to go about doing it, and then I find you! Great Idea!

user6682 03/ 2/2007 #

Oh, i forgot to ask: how many rows per square?

girlontherocks 03/ 2/2007 #

Sandy, I would love to do this again. I too would like to have a bunch of granny squares from different places.

Preety, as many rows as needed to make your square 6 inches in size.

Everyone, in planning for the future what do you think is a good number of partners (maybe even more than three)? Also is 6 inches sufficient in size for future swaps? Send me a Message via the swapbot form.... I don't want the discussion of square size to confuse participants of this swap. I guess some of your answers might depend on how this swap turns out!

user6682 03/ 2/2007 #

sorry, didn't read it right...

Bearynice 03/ 3/2007 #

hi I think this is great but feel we should do two squares to three partners that way mixed with our own we would have a nice throw bev

ladystumblindummy 03/ 5/2007 #

please no wool i am very allergic. I ve been looking for a granny square exchange. I love crocheting mary

user5628 03/ 7/2007 #

I agree with Bev, 2 squares would be good. The 6 inch size is good too, you would only need to add 2 of your own and you would have a good size for a granny square bag or a cozy scarf. I think we definitely need to do more of these swaps, I have so many ideas now for what to do with the squares I receive.

user4736 03/ 8/2007 #

Grin and don't forget pillowghans or just plain 12 inch pillows the probable end of mine. I have local grandkids which is really nice but they really miss pillows to hug or lay all over etc.

I want to make sure I get this right b/c I'm really excited about what I think is happening...we are going to this swap a few times over the next few months, so that we end up with enough squares to make a throw or whatever...correct? (please say yes)

girlontherocks 03/ 8/2007 #

Yes lets do it again! I'm up for it! i wasn't sure if anyone would even be interested in swapping. i definitely agree with Bev and blonde that NEXT time we should also send a few squares to each partner for. they work up so quickly!

This time, let's keep it to only square since that was the description when most people signed up.

girlontherocks 03/ 8/2007 #

errr... typo.... I mean to say let's keep it to only ONE square...

alicepalace 03/13/2007 #

Hiya!

I've a little request: I'm moving on the 24th, so if you're sending to me, PLEASE wait till after then as I'll change my address on the 24th and not before (I know it's stupid but i'm scared to jinx things...). If in doubt, please message me before sending, to check. Thanks so much. :)

girlontherocks 03/15/2007 #

Just a reminder that if you are an unrated newbie, please fill out your profile (or drop me a note) as soon as you can. Partners should be handed out tomorrow and I want you to be able to participate!

ANGELFAIRY 03/18/2007 #

Can we make them any color we want or do we ask our partners. Thanks!

girlontherocks 03/19/2007 #

Angel,

We never really established anything about color, and I mentioned just using what you have around. So I think the colors are up to you! You could always ask if you want to be accomodating.

hadenmaiden 03/19/2007 #

Just a quickie to say I mailed out today - all my partners are international, so will probably take about a week to arrive ;)

girlontherocks 03/19/2007 #

I just mailed out my squares today too. And I immediately went into granny-swap withdrawal. So I started another swap:

http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/2663

Though it overlaps with this one, sign-ups are open until April 8th (a week after our swap here ends). And then there is an additional two weeks to make the squares before the mailing deadline.

Inspired by suggestions from you, I made the partnering a little bit different. There will be two partners and you will send each of them 3 squares. Hope to see you there!

kushkusha 03/21/2007 #

I Sent Mine :-) Please give it a time - All are international!!

alicepalace 03/22/2007 #

I sent mine today. Unusually, only one is going to the states (lene), and one is even within the UK (itch2stitch)! And the other to Australia (jan). Hope they all arrive safe and sound.

jannikinz 03/22/2007 #

I got my first package today..Thanks to itch2stitch..love it.

HappyCactus 03/24/2007 #

Karrie and Carolyn - I recieved both of your squares today...thank you so much!

girlontherocks 03/24/2007 #

I got my first square today - thanks carolyn!

user6452 03/25/2007 #

Hi! MaryO in NJ, I got my square from you yesterday, and it's lovely! Thank you so much! You do such neat work, too -- the finishing is very nice.

My squares are all packaged up to be mailed. I had intended to mail them out on Saturday, as I've already got the postage on them, but then remembered that my PO is only open for one hour on Saturdays, and since my squares are going overseas, I can't just drop them in the outside post box. (The postal lady needs to be given the stub of the customs form I filled out for each one.)So, I'll mail them off Monday morning! Hope they'll arrive promptly.

user6452 03/26/2007 #

Me again! Alice, I got your square today and I absolutely love it! Such pretty colours -- I especially like the teal green. And your yarn must be a bit finer than mine, or maybe you stitch slightly tighter, as you got more rows in 6 inches than I did. It looks great with more rows! Will have to see if I can achieve that with a smaller hook, different yarns...

I love the pretty little gift tag, too! Did you make it? You must be very crafty.

Thanks again! I'm enjoying this swap tremendously, and am in the next one as well. Please, if I miss out on a third granny swap, someone contact me and let me know, ok? I'd love to keep doing these.

jannikinz 03/26/2007 #

Thanks to AlicePalace for my square. Very nice.

kushkusha 03/27/2007 #

Lene, How Many rows do you have? And how many Alice did?

I have 5 Rows:-)

user6452 03/27/2007 #

Heh, I just rooted out some I've been doing in prep for the next swap, and they're 5 rows, except for one that uses a thinner yarn mixed with one that is fatter, and that one is 5 rows plus a row of hdc done in the same pattern, added to be sure it measures a full 6". Hers were 7 rows. I do think maybe the yarn is slightly thinner than what I've used. You know how some two yarns can each be worsted weight yada yada, but one feels fatter? I think that's what is at work here.

Hi Peety, Jenni and Kushkusha,

I just wanted to let you know that I mailed out your square to you yesterday, March 26, 2007. Kushkusha, you will have to wait for a little while because I send your square ground mail to Israel.

I hope you all like them. And also too, let me know when you receive it.

kushkusha 03/27/2007 #

Many thanks! I am so happy to hear about it! I knew it will take time - hope I'll have enough Patient:-)

The same is relevannt to my partners - give it about three weeks.

alicepalace 03/29/2007 #

Hi! I used Double Knitting yarn, which is pretty much standard weight in the UK - we don't have worsted weight. Weird huh? :)

Also, many thanks to MaryO for my square, it's really pretty, love the varigated yarn.

HappyCactus 03/29/2007 #

Peety,Tri-State Linx, and Preeety - your squares are on their way to you! Let me know when you get them...

TriStateLinx 03/30/2007 #

Hi Graphics,

I'll definitely let you know when I receive your square. Thanks a mill.

johannauk 03/30/2007 #

Mine all went out today...hope the recipients will like them :)

gillicious 03/30/2007 #

Mine went out today as well.

user5628 03/30/2007 #

I have marked this swap as sent, but unfortunately, due to a mail van catching on fire, I am not sure if my items will arrive at their destinations. I have notified the coordinator of this swap and my swap partner/s. The only information I have about this event is that some items were not harmed and have already been sent, some were damaged and where there is a senders address will be returned to the sender – hopefully within the next week, and some items were totally destroyed with no way of knowing who they were to or from. Obviously I am hoping for the ‘best-case scenario’ but as i have an over-abundance of squares already made, replacing these items will not be a problem.

On the bright side, this has given me an excellent reason to go and buy more crafting items to restock my already over flowing craft room.

TriStateLinx 04/ 2/2007 #

Hi Graphic,
