Description:

String X is the name, and strings galore is the game!

This should be an easy and stash-busting swap. The String X Block is made of a strip of little pieces, sewn to a foundation of muslin or other neutral, lightweight fabric, cut into a square triangle-point at two ends as the diagonal center stripe of the block. You add two background color triangles, and Voila! It's done! So...

...We are swapping a string of Stripage--made up of short strips sewn together for 30 inches!!

The easiest way to make it may be to just pick out random little pieces at least 4" long and 1-2" wide and sew them together one after the other until you reach 30 inches, then trim to 4" wide, nice and straight, press, fold and stick in an envelope.

When your partners receive them they can then cut them to the size they need for their blocks, and add their preferred background color and have a number of blocks, depending on how they cut them.

In measuring them to cut, don't forget to include the pointy ends in your figuring. A 10" straight cut, may not give you ten inches after you cut the points, so take care. Also remember that your measurement is the diagonal measurement of your block.

It's based on Sender's Stash, so go ahead and start stitching! Send a minimum of 30" x 4" wide, nice and straight, random as you like.

(You could also make shorter 4" wide strips, trim and add strips together to get to 30"--might be easier to keep it straight this way)

Make nice 14" seams, press neatly and do work you'd like to receive!

Do the pieces that make up the string need to be perfectly straight? Obviously, the width should be straight, but do the individual scraps used need to be? I hope that makes sense. If not, I will try to be clearer; just let me know.

I have the same question as @ChrisAnne ....when sewing the strips together do they need to maintain the same width or can they be like the heartstrings strips, maybe thinner at one end than the other for a scrappy/wonky kind of look? Even or wonky is fine with me but sometimes wonky is easier because it allows for a little less straight stitching. Just let us know. Thank you @twobluecrows for hosting this, I am looking forward to it!

Wonky and scrappy is just fine! Not too wonky, but some is good.

I was thinking...For the pointy bits, one could also easily just cut a triangle to add to the ends of their strips...duh! lol

Another question -- where you say 1-2" wide; I'm reading that as being one or two inches wide not 1/2 inch wide. I hope that's right.

And are you kind of suggesting we put a triangle piece at the end -- or both ends of the 30 inch long piece?

The strips we make don't need the triangles at the ends, our partners will add them when they cut the strips to the length they need for their size blocks, along with the background color pieces.

And yes, it's scrap strips one to two inches wide by five+ inches long, which, when you subtract the 1/4" seam allowances will end up being 1/2" to 1" wide. I did mine all about 5" or more long when I sewed them to the foundation, keeping one side all even to make it easier to trim to 4"- 5" wide for the 30" strip.

Make any sense now?

I sure hope I did mine correctly but if I did not understand the instructions and made mine wrong I hope my partner will forgive me and give me an opportunity to send.

I sent mine on the 4th but forgot to click the button.
