Can I use a tin type jar or a crystal light plastic container or any container as long at it is 16oz or larger? Just thinking a glass jar could break and would be heavy.

Yes you can use any container 16 oz or larger as long as you decorate it.

Shipping costs would depend on a variety of things..basically by weight...how heavy the items are that you place in the container??
