Description:

"Cubomania is a surrealist method of making collages in which a picture or image is cut into squares and the squares are then reassembled without regard for the image." A rearrangement of one image creating an entirely new image.

With that in mind, find yourself an image (or 2), chop it up into squares and then reassemble those squares RANDOMLY onto a sturdy-enough-to-mail base. Ta-da, you have made a new work of art! Mail your new work of art as a postcard to your partner, signed and stamped.

Suggestions

  • Be kind to yourself and cut your image in to 1 inch(ish) squares. They'll be a lot easier to reassemble in the end. If you go too big you'll end up with a piece that's not much more different/interesting than the original image. Too small will make for a very interesting piece, but will likely kill you. Not really, but it's pretty hardcore.
  • You can use any kind of image, in part or whole. If you find one you like, but it's huge, feel free to cut out and use the most interesting part.
  • And if you find an image you like but it's too small to translate into a postcard (3.5" x 5" minimum), you can cut up another image and add it - or give your postcard a border. Whatever.

I've hosted a version of this swap before. You can see it here: [C+P Cubomania Postcard] (lots of discussion attached, with examples).

The swap image is the pc I made for that swap. [Larger view here.]

I like this idea. I'll probably just paste over another PC with some ugly image on it, lol. Thanks for hosting.

What sort of adhesive do you suggest for photographs? I don't trust glue sticks, hot glue is lumpy looking and I would like to avoid packing tape for just one mail art swap. :/

@oblivionspin - hmm, Aleene's makes a Clear Gel Tacky Glue. It's a little bit more...loose?...than their regular stuff. I would use that and spread it thin by scraping it on with a credit card.

oh DUH I swore by that stuff for years and have a damn bottle on my supply shelf right by my desk.
I clearly took way too long of a break from mixed media. -_- don't mind me while I rediscover everything I used to be obsessed with. smdh.

I often lightly sand the back of photos or magazine pages in order to "rough them up" and help them adhere better. I used the white Aleen's glue mixed with Elmer's - about a 50/50 mix. One is very thick, one is a bit thin, together they are prefect. Use a very light grit sandpaper for roughing up magazine or glossy paper.

I'm glad I remembered I signed up for this swap because Swap-Bot decided not to send an email to let me know partners had been assigned :|
