Description:

I'm doing lesson plans for the fall and one of the first thing I'm doing with my advanced drawing kids is blind contour. The great thing about blind contour is that is can be equal parts frustrating and liberating!

The principle is that you have to fight the part of your brain that seeks order to get to the creative side of your brain. The internal struggle is real! It will be surprisingly hard to be able to do this, but keep trying..... you will get it and the more you practice, the more detailed your drawings get. It really teaches you how to see.

Here are the rules of blind contour:

figure out what you wish to draw you cannot talk or communicate while doing this pretend your eye is attached to your pencil, and as your eye travels over surfaces - your pencil must draw them - chase lines with your eye and draw them with the pencil the drawing must be one continuous line you cannot pick up your pencil

most importantly - YOU CANNOT LOOK WHILE DRAWING!

Practice a few times before you attempt the one to send, but see below to feel better about your work. :)

You will create a minimum 4 x 6 postcard and ship it naked. Before it travels, add some color to it. It can be selective coloring or all over coloring.

Swap image was borrowed from google. Pretty cool, huh? I take no credit for that cool cat!

Here's a video showing how it's done: http://youtu.be/FKHVqbM_xLU

This concept is amazing at what you produce. Come try it!

It's the first step I use for teaching drawing. It really turns out quite lovely. :)

If I drew a blind contour of a cat it wouldn't look at all like a cat - that person either was an absolute master or it was more of a semi-blind contour, lol. Those lines are near perfect!

The idea is that it most likely WON"T look like it. :) I've done it for nearly thirty years and am pretty good at it, BUT my kids STILL can't keep a straight face when they watch me demo it. It's pretty amusing - go for it! :D

Love doing hands, easy and semi look like hands. Lol

I think I'm going to do my son...... I need an example of something OTHER than my hands. I do those in class all the time, my students are sick of them. ;)

Yes, but first timers may find it easier to start out on.
