Description:

I have so many old children's books from 60's and 70's, and it would be nice to put some use to them. For this swap, you will have 3 partners and you will send each partner two ATCS (a total of 6 made). The only restriction is that you must use vintage children's book cut-outs to make these (although it doesn't have to be your only material). If you don't have books like these, you have plenty of time to search for them! Look in thrift stores, particularly ones that aren't chains and focus on old/vintage things.

To summarize:

+Make two ATCs for each of your three partners.

+It's alright if you're new to Swap-bot, just have your profile filled out.

+This swap is international.

Edit: I have to push the swap deadline back two days because I just realized that I'll be out of town without internet access until the night of the 21st so I wouldn't be able to assign partners on the 20th. I'm sorry if this creates any problems, but hopefully it shouldn't since it's just two days.

Yikes, cutting books is sacreligious to me. Can we scan and copy them insteed. I have some great old children's books, but don't believe in cutting any book.

Chloetron 07/15/2008 #

Maybe don't cut up your valuable books? Tons and tons of crafters rely on books for materials. If you're going to scan them, I'd appreciate it if the scans are the same quality as what you would get if you cut it out of a book.

you may find lots of kid's books at local library sales for a dime or so. elementary school libraries toss books at the end and beginning of each school year. you may want to call librarians and ask them to hold them for you instead of recycling them. i found 14 books in my son's elementary school recycling bin last year! they weren't in great condition, obviously, but they are perfect for projects. one other suggestion: sign up for your local 'freecycle' online. you can place an ad for 'wanted, used children's books, any condition'. you would be surprised at the response!

bicyclerepairman- this is a perfect idea!

The scan or copy could be printed on parchment paper that is available in any calligraphy section of art stores. This will give an authentic look to the vintage illustrations. Modgepodge on top helps preserve the image....I have had some images dissapear...anyone have any other info along these lines?

I've been working with vintage children's illustrations for years now, and the basics have already been outlined above. The best sources for books are thrift shos and garage sales, closely followed by library book sales. Modge Podge is the BEST for decoupaging and working with graphics of any sort. It may feel quite evil when you first start cutting up the books, but it's more likely that you're putting them to better use than when they were just sitting there on the shelf, counting the days until a child ripped it up or tossed it. Enjoy it!

Hi there! Really looking forward to this swap. Just want to confirm that the deadline is in October and not September. I already received a card so I got a bit unsure. Thanks!

Audacity 09/ 7/2008 #

The deadline is October, you're right. I have a feeling a lot of swappers send their stuff early.

If anyone wants to do a one-on-one with this or a similar theme, just ask! I adore children's lit, and have boxes and boxes of great scraps for it!

Chloetron 09/14/2008 #

Yes, the deadline is in October. I gave a lot of time for this swap because I was busy with starting school again and I figured others would have the same issue.
