Bunka Doll Head Pin

I know that many of you have seen these little cute dolls everywhere; the popular little Japanese Dolls called Bunka. They are so adorable.

Challenge: Make a “Bunka Doll Head Pin”. I have provided instructions below to help you make a Bunka Doll Pin along with a few hyperlinks that has pictures to give you ideals on how to make one.

INSTRUCTIONS: Take something that is round (i.e. a drinking glass, jar, or a saucer that is between 2” to 3-1/2” round in diameter). Cut out the following pieces: 1 cardboard piece, 2 felt pieces, and 1 muslin fabric in flesh tone of your choice.

Take a threaded needle and make a running stitch with matching thread and layer; the flesh tone muslin piece down, place 1 felt piece and the cardboard on top; then pull up the thread like you would make a fabric yoyo. (Note: Cardboard piece should be about 1 inch smaller than muslin and felt pieces). Secure threads and turn to the side without threads showing and drawn and paint on your Bunka Doll Face using acrylic paints, colored pencils, gels pens, blush, etc. Use the hyperlinks below for ideas on painting her face. Crochet or use lace for her hat; use embellishments for her hat using ribbons, silk flowers, beads, and buttons. Hot glue your second piece of felt on the backside around the edges only to secure and cover up any treads. Take a metal pin back and sew unto the back of your brooch. Great! You have just completed your Bunka Doll Head Pin and is now ready to wear!
