Description:

Inspired by a thread on handwriting, I thought it would be neat to create a swap that celebrates and showcases longhand writing. Whether you think your handwriting could rival that of royalty or is worse than a doctor's, share it--write it loud and proud!

For this swap:

  • You will have two (2) partners
  • You will send each partner your handwriting sampler featuring each letter of the alphabet (A-Z) in uppercase and lowercase along with the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" and the same sentence written with your non-dominant hand (i.e. switch hands)
  • (Optional) Include a sampler of your numbers (0-9) and/or common punctuation marks such as ? & * ! # @ and so forth -- thank you @flyingfox for the suggestion
  • (Optional, but highly encouraged) Write your partner an introductory letter telling about yourself

In order to join, make sure:

  • You have a 4.98 rating or above (newbies allowed with well filled out profiles)
  • You have no 1's in the past year and no unexplained 3's in the past six months
  • You can communicate clearly as needed, will send on time, and will rate promptly

This is a USA only swap to keep postage low and turnaround times quick. If you'd like to join the international version, click here.

I'll check profiles and remove swappers as necessary and do a final profile check May 1, 2014 before assigning partners. You'll then have just over two weeks to complete, if you haven't already, and mail your swap. Please don't forget to include your username and the swap name somewhere.

The idea is for this to be a simple (and I hope fun) swap. I will angel after you've rated your partner a 1 if necessary, but please don't make it necessary--we're all adults here.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please send me a PM or leave a comment below.

Our handwriting sampler should be in "cursive", not "print", yes?

flyingfox 04/24/2014 #

I am thinking I would just do the sampler in cursive as well as print, although my writing is a weird mixture of both.... Some of the letter combinations that should get connected don't, and other combinations that have no business getting joined up still end up together....

teli 04/24/2014 #

@hollycm6 -- either/or/both whatever you feel most comfortable using. :D

Like @flyingfox mine will likely be a mixture of both!

I feel a little stupid - I am confused. Are we writing Aa Bb Cc etc. in our style and then the sentence written both right handed and left-handed?

teli 04/24/2014 #

@AliCrafter -- please don't feel stupid. That's a great question and yes, you have it precisely correct. You're doing your ABC's in upper/lowercase (you can do ABC/abc or AaBbCc) and then writing the sentence with right/left hands. :)

Would be nice to see the sample of how everyone writes numbers as well... Like cross the "7"? "1" looks like a "l" (a lowercase L) or has a large "roof"? "9" with a straight leg, looking like "q"? Some people's "4" resembles "6", and so on... Maybe you could tuck it on as an optional item, since it won't require too much effort?

That's a great idea @flyingfox -- thanks! :)

Because of this swap, and the thread that led to it, I bought a fountain pen today. :-)

teli 04/28/2014 #

Huzzah @LizzyJo -- which one did you get?

LizzyJo 04/29/2014 #

@teli --I didn't have many choices, since I wanted it yesterday and didn't want to send for it and wait for it to arrive. I didn't want to pay $60 for the one I found at Office Max (not knowing if I would even like using one), so ended up getting the only one that Hobby Lobby had that wasn't strictly a calligraphy pen (brand is Manuscript, made in the UK).

teli 04/30/2014 #

@LizzyJo -- I've used the Manuscript brand before, although I think it was a calligrapy pen. That said, I've heard good things about their fountain pen and I hope it behaves fabulously for you. :D
