Description:

Okay, so I've been sort of obsessed with this for a while, and decided to swap with it.

This is based on Six-word memoirs found here: http://www.smithmag.net/sixwords/

Just read the evolving text box for an idea of how this works.

Words don't need to be in abundance to be personal. How much light six words can shed on your life is truly amazing, and I think this is a really interesting outreach idea.

For this swap, you will write ten six-word memoirs pertaining to yourself, your life, fears, lost loves, whatever you want and feel like.

Six very lucky people will have a chance to peer into the window of your life, be it facets of the past, present, or future.

Each of these six people will receive no less than ten little six-word memoirs. Not everybody has to receive the same ten, but if you want to only write ten, and copy them, that's fine too.

I hope this swap excites people as much as it does me!

Anyone can sign up for this swap. But keep in mind six people is a lot of responsibility. if you feel you are unable to keep up your end of it, please consider whether or not you should sign up. I will be checking to make sure people who join this swap are sincere and diligent swappers.

Due to the number of swap partners, and the cost of postage (which I understand has everyone grumbling) this swap will be US only. This means the cost of sending should only be 41 cents per envelope, meaning $2.46 for six people.

Don't forget, it's 42 cents now! Wouldn't want anyone's letter returned for a measly penny:)

Can this be emailed?

great idea - love the idea of writing a "story" with six words - i checked out the website and found it very interesting - thanks for sharing this with all of us.

wackystuff 06/20/2008 #

Too cheap to include the world?

kaypendragon 06/20/2008 #

I just read that book - there were some great ones in there.

azrosieposie 06/20/2008 #

In what type of format are you looking for us to write these memoirs? ATC size? Letter paper size? Or does anything go? Also, just to confirm....we send (10) 6-word memoirs to 6 different people? Thanks!

lingy 06/20/2008 #

@ Tia: No emailing, sorry. The point is to receive it in the mail, physically. This is as much about the tangibility of someone's words as it is about someone's story.

@wackystuff I had no idea so many people were going to be so into this. I thought as a first round, I would make it US only. If there are people who are really upset they cannot join this solely because they live elsewhere other than the US, I can change it to international. I think it's slightly rude of you to slip a comment like that in, in an accusatory tone. You could just ask nicely; did you think I would automatically say no?

@azrosieposie Anything goes for format. You are at liberty to present your memoirs however you wish =] Yes, you will send ten six-worded memoirs to six different people.

If any of you have anymore questions, feel free to ask.

And just on a general note, how many people would like this to be international? If enough people say yes, I will make it so.

What a fabulous and original idea! I am SOO excited! I plan to use index cards for each of my ten subjects and decorate each with a little something!

I prefer that it stays US since the cost of international postage can really add up. Plus, having to trek over to the post office is a bit of a pain. Maybe you could start a second one that covers international for those people who are so insistent? ;)-

this is a marvelous idea. This is the best writing swap I've seen in awhile!

ShandaPanda 06/21/2008 #

Thanks for hosting this! It has really inspired me. I am usually a procratinator with my swaps but this one got me right up off my chair and I am almost done already!

ShandaPanda 06/21/2008 #

...and it goes perfectly with my other crafting "love" of ATC's...

moowee 06/21/2008 #

I have mine ready - What fun!!

bluegrassgirl 06/22/2008 #

OMG! I was going to host this exact same swap. It has been on my to do list for a while now. I first heard about it on NPR. Wow! Great minds think alike :)

bluegrassgirl 06/22/2008 #

lingy 06/22/2008 #

CraftyDiana 07/ 1/2008 #

What a fun swap. I have already received three of mine and they were so moving and really inspired me.

cerwinrhiannon 07/ 1/2008 #

This was so much fun. I wouldn't mind doing it again.

5trawberry 07/ 3/2008 #

This was a lot of fun! I, too, would like to do this again (and not panic and mail off my envelopes before making them more special).

Thank you everyone!
