Description:

I recently made one of my swap friends a small handmade book made out of envelopes. In each pocket (envelope) I put a small surprise... it was so cute, I thought it would be lovely to make another one for someone and get one in return.

You will be making your partner a small book completely made out of envelopes. It is surprisingly not that hard, and if you are creative & up for a challenge, it is a really fun project.

The book will fit inside a standard size envelope (half of A4) and will be cheap to mail. Creativity is key here, there's no really "wrong" or "rights" and it's all about putting your own spin on things.

What to do?

  • Make a standard size envelope. Fold it in half, like a book. This is the front & back cover.

  • Make another (MINIMUM) 4 handmade envelopes.

  • Each envelope should be a different colour/theme/made out of different papers. Craft paper, card stock, magazine pages, mail art, whatever you want to use. Note the envelopes don't have to all be the same size, they can get smaller and smaller, be in different shapes and sizes, etc.

  • Fold the envelopes & put the envelopes inside the book, bind them with ribbon, string, tape, etc, they can't be loose. The envelopes will act as pages.

  • In each envelope, put a small surprise for your partner. A sticker, a letter, paper scraps, a postcard, atcs, embellishments, anything that can fit.

  • How many "pages" aka envelopes in your book you include is up to you, but 4 is minimum. What you make them out of is senders choice; get creative.

  • Decorate the envelope book further with stamps, stickers, collage, drawings, paper goods, quotes, embellishments, anything you can think of.

  • Put it inside an envelope, include a note for your partner with the swap name etc, and send it! :)

Please put a lot of thought into it and create something you are proud of. Stick to the layout guidelines above & size. As long as there is a front and back cover which is a folded envelope, and inside "pages" made out of envelopes, with small surprises inside for your partner, it is up to you what to do with it! :)

I can't find exact pictures online of what it should look like, but there is tons of inspiration online, on pinterest, there's tutorials on youtube etc. Below are just a few and are not exactly what is expected of you; it is just ideas.

Rating is kept high. If you have 1's or 3's I will be checking on your profile why. I check all profiles, etc., and will be keeping it tight to participate because of the effort involved in this swap. I will ban easily if you don't meet rating requirements to join this swap. That is so pretty!! What a lovely idea. Not crafty enough myself but they look gorgeous :-)

peaceandlove 02/26/2014 #

ok, this may be a stupid question ---but---are you speaking of an envelope for sending a letter? A business size envelope? Can you give me the dimensions of an A4 envelope please.

Peony 02/26/2014 #

Do they all have to be handmade envelopes? I have some airmail and security envelopes that seem like they'd be nice embellished and mixed in with the handmade envelopes.

This is a great idea! I would love to give it a try! Also a question: with the first step of making the book, you say to use a standard size envelope to fold so it can be used as the cover. What size were you thinking of? Can I use a A5 sized envelope for that? If I use a smaller size, my cover is going to be very small.

cutesygirlynai 02/27/2014 #

@peaceandlove no, all envelopes must be handmade. size is up to you. just make sure it is not huge.

cutesygirlynai 02/27/2014 #

@peony you are welcome to use these as long as you are using at least 4 handmade envelopes in the book

cutesygirlynai 02/27/2014 #

@eskyris yes you fold an envelope for a cover.

i make all my envelopes without measuring them so there is no exact size. the first one i did of this envelope book, i just made a normal size envelope, nothing too big or small, folded it in half and it made the front and back cover. by "standard size" i mean the sort of envelopes that are most commonly used.

i don't mind what size your envelope book is as long as it is not big and it is not microscopticly small. i don't want to give too many rules for your guys because how you make this book is up to you, it is your creation & i don't really want you to be measuring things. in prospective, i would expect everyone's books when completed to be no bigger than a postcard front and back, and no smaller than a deco or slam book.

I love this idea. I already made my cover envelope out of a colorful calender page.

Question though, is the idea that the book will be taken apart upon receipt and each envelope should be able to be used for mailing eventually? Like should I put a plain white address label on the envelopes?

cutesygirlynai 03/13/2014 #

@nisforneville no. the idea is that it is a handmade book. the envelopes are just pages. i'm not sure what you mean by putting a plain white address label on the envelopes... what you decorate your book with is up to you. see the links for ideas in the swap description.
