Description:

This time we are taking the "paste" out of Cut+Paste.

The challenge with this swap will be to create a paper collage without using any of the more conventional glues we're accustomed to using. Things like glue sticks, liquid/gel glues, glue runners, gel mediums, Mod Podge, double sided tape ~ pretty much anything found in the adhesives section where ever you load up on supplies.

What can we use in place of glue then?

  • washi, deco or packing tapes
  • self-laminating sheets
  • machine or hand sewing
  • encaustic techniques
  • staples or other hardware attachments

Mix 'em up & combine attachment methods however you like. There are more options I'm not thinking of, I'm sure. Share them in the comments, please!

So, what's the deal?

  • Create one collage without using any glue, minimum size 5"x5".
  • The theme is artist's choice.
  • Other mediums are welcome ~ paint, ink, etc.
  • Substrate is artist's choice. Depending on what you use as your "glue" you could use anything from card stock to corrugated cardboard as your base. Maybe you'll sandwich your collage between self-laminating sheets and not need a base? That'll work too.

Do not simply compose a collage out of nothing but sticky type stuff; i.e. no washi tape only collages or sticker only collages - that would pretty much take the fun right out of the challenge.

Because of the possible delicate nature of our collages, we will be sending them in envelopes, so don't worry if parts of your collage aren't completely adhered flat all over.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions if you have any!

The swap graphic is a collage by Caatje (Carin) Winkelman and was made using machine stitching to attach the parts.

Oooh, a reason to pull out my wax, which I've so been wanting to do. I've never mailed a wax piece before...hmm... Watching for now, but great idea, Steph!

can we stitch things on?

stephiedee 09/24/2012 #

@Lady - Yes, hand/machine sewing and stitching are acceptable.

FarStarr 09/24/2012 #

gum???

stephiedee 09/24/2012 #

ABC gum? Ew.

FarStarr 09/25/2012 #

Well, it couldn't be fresh gum...not sticky enough!

This is a swap that really makes me wish I had a modern sewing machine. My antique Singer featherweight is great for mending, and even making, clothes, but I can't subject it to the stress of sewing cardboard. :-(

FarStarr is a creative thinker! hehe

Stick deodorant? I have some tissue I want to attach....hmm?

just FYI : once I grabbed a stick of sunblock instead of my glue stick -- doesn't work!
