Description:

This swap will require time and commitment to prepare, but the reward is a full year of encouragement, inspiration and surprises. This is the third year we will have done it and I can’t say enough about how motivational it is to have a packet to open each and every month.

The idea is to give your partner, in advance, a year's worth of inspiration in one package. The package will contain an introductory letter from you, a dozen encouraging letters with a surprise, a writing mascot for the year, a wrapped birthday present with a card, and a minimum of three wrapped pick-me-up surprises.

With an eye toward postage costs, this is a U.S./Canada only version. We have officers in New Zealand/Australia who can post identical swaps for those regions. Other international members, post below if you would like a version.

U.S. swappers: the flat-rate boxes from the post office are a mailing option, as is Parcel Post. Depending on the size/weight of your package, you may find that other shippers (i.e. FedEx Ground or UPS) might be cheaper than the post office.

Please read through the entire swap description because there are several components.

The package you prepare for your partner should include the following:

  • A letter or note introducing yourself

Tell your partner who you are, what you do, the type of writing you enjoy and anything else you'd like to share.

  • 12 letters with a surprise

Each should be in a sealed and separate envelope or packet and labeled with the month. Each letter should be at least one page and encourage your partner toward his or her writing goals (see below for suggested themes to follow) and contain a small surprise (examples include, but aren’t limited to, a bookmark, magnet, pen, etc.)

To assist you in what to write about for each month's letter, here are some themes you can follow. You can approach these from any direction. (And yes, they differ a bit from last year and the year before.)

• January: A New Day/A New Year

• February: Goals/Revising Goals

• March: Words

• April: Why write?

• May: Advice

• June: Combat procrastination

• July: Inspiration

• August: The Muse

• September: Writing prompts

• October: Blocks and setbacks

• November: Wishing and Dreaming

• December: The End

The monthly surprises don't have to be expensive or even store-bought. You can take advantage of back-to-school and holiday sales to find great items. Use your creativity, your partner's profile and even the monthly themes to assist in coming up with appropriate surprises.

If you join now (swap posted Sept. 12, 2012) and start drafting your letters, you will have three months to get your letters written.

TIP: Do not wait until the last minute draft your letters. This is the time-consuming part of this swap.

  • A writing mascot for the year

This is something that your partner can place on her/his desk or computer, carry with a laptop or otherwise keep close for use and/or inspiration throughout 2013. Some examples of what you could send: a small stuffed animal, a mug, a plaque or wall hanging, a small piece of art, a pin, a pen, etc. These are just examples, use your partner's profile and/or your creativity to come up with an appropriate 2013 Writers' Mascot.

  • A wrapped birthday present and birthday card

This will be for your partner to open on his or her birthday. Be sure to include a card.

  • Pick-me-up surprises

We all face difficult moments or days throughout the year. Include for your partner a minimum of three pick-me-up surprises that are labeled as such. Please include a card or note (or letter if you so desire) of encouragement. These will be opened whenever needed during the year. Be sure to label the envelope or wrapped item as a pick-me-up surprise. These can be profile surprises or something your partner will appreciate. It doesn't have to be writing related, but should be something to brighten her day.

Optional If you would like to include any additional envelopes, packages or materials for your partner, feel free to do so.

Recap

As you see, this is a time-intensive swap. You don't need to wait for partners to be assigned to start gathering items and writing your encouraging letters. After partners are assigned you can look for or create the surprises, mascot and birthday present using your partner’s profile as a guide.

How much is all of this going to cost? That will depend entirely on you. If you are a bargain hunter and/or good crafter, it could be done for less than $20 (plus postage). The primary cost is in the time it will take to prepare and write the monthly missives. There were a lot of concerns last year about time and cost, so this is being posted now to give you the maximum amount of time to prepare.

The Watchlist A lot of swappers like to put swaps on the watchlist and then forget about them completely. You have to actually watch your watchlist because you won’t receive automatic reminders from Swap-bot.

Thank you @angel1985 for inspiring this swap.

I REALLY love this idea! If I can write at least half of them before the signup deadline I'll definitely join (only because I won't have a lot of time in Nov to do anything so I want to make sure :p)

deviousdomi 09/23/2012 #

Totally joining! The send by date is my sons first birthday so I will have it out well before then. :)

Good plan, PaperMoon. It's a swap that's well worth it. This is my second year and I'm loving the monthly inspiration. I look forward to the start of each month just so I can see what's awaiting me. And the pick-me-ups are there just when you need them.

Artistic 09/26/2012 #

Glad to have you deviousdomi! Welcome to the group and to the swap!

papermoon 09/27/2012 #

Joined! It's about halfway compiled (except for some holes that need filled when I'm assigned a partner :p) and it's going to be so much fun to finally put together! Can't wait! :D

Partners have been assigned for this swap! Thanks to all of you for joining!

Artistic 12/13/2012 #

ALL: The send by date has been pushed out by a week -- to Dec. 21. Please see individual email for more information.

Artistic 12/21/2012 #

A big ole box was sent out to my partner yesterday via Parcel Post with delivery confirmation. I'll send the DC # via PM so you can track it.

Artistic 01/ 1/2013 #

Writers: I'm sad to report that we have a flaker in our midst. She has deleted her account so that's why I'm writing this here instead of in the email.

I'm putting together an angel package for the writer who was flaked on. If anyone would like to contribute to it, please post below with the month of 2013 that you would like to angel for. You would need to send a letter following the monthly theme and a surprise directly to the person who was flaked on. I will angel any missing months and the other swap elements.

I'll PM the swapper's address to those who volunteer.

Thanks so much for your consideration.

F.A.

Welcome to the Year-round portion of the swap!!

Greetings all!

If you're seeing this message that means you got the letter I sent to all of the swap participants! At the start of the new month, I'll post the first link or question. Let's use this swap to encourage each other throughout the year.

See you in February!

Love that you're doing this, thank you for putting in the thought and time for some extra inspiration!

MoonlightSonata 02/ 1/2013 #

I am very much looking forward to the extension of this swap! Felicia- I also have all my packages in a basket and on the first of the month is my open day! So far I have gotten some great things. I hope everyone else has as well.

Artistic 02/ 2/2013 #

Hey there! Glad to see you guys took me up on the offer. It's saturday as i write this and instead of writing on my WIP, i am listening to'Gone girl' while working on some swaps. Which begs our first discussion question: why do writers procrastinate? What do you think?

Artistic 02/ 2/2013 #

Moonlight: I opened my feb envelope yesterday. My partner had some lovely tea notepads waiting for me. :) thank you!

MoonlightSonata 02/ 4/2013 #

In regards to the discussion question.. I think writers procrastinate for numerous reasons. I think my own personal reasons are lack of confidence in both my writing abilities and in where my story is going. Sometimes its just writers block and sometimes its having too many options for which way the story could go now... And my writing tends to be better when not forced and the drive hits me. I think that could be true of most writers. I think I also do it in search of inspiration. :) On another note, Artistic: I'm glad you're enjoying your goodies! I have already been thinking of starting to collect stuff for this swap next year lol.

Artistic 02/ 5/2013 #

On procrastination: I burned the entire weekend. Spent Saturday in the house -- just barely got outside to get the newspaper off the sidewalk. Never even got dressed. LOOKED at the computer and that was it. When I'm writing for just me, I tend to get things done. When I'm writing to/for an actual deadline (like I'm doing now) I just get this "oh, I'll do that later" thing going. And when later comes, it's too late. With all of that said, my goal for tonight (Feb. 5) is 3 pages -- despite "NCIS."

Artistic 03/13/2013 #

I missed the March question. So here's one for mid-month.

How are things going on your goals and resolutions this year?

Artistic 03/23/2013 #

Anyone planning to participate in April's camp NaNoWriMo?

MoonlightSonata 04/11/2013 #

I keep telling myself that I am going to do the NaNoWriMo, but I never do. My personal life has gotten a little hectic lately and sadly my writing hasn't been top priority. Hopefully it will all balance out soon. :)

Artistic 05/ 2/2013 #

May is here! That means my birthday!!

This month's question is about celebrating. How do you celebrate writing achievements? What rewards do you give yourself?

Artistic 06/ 3/2013 #

We've reached the year's 6th month? Time for a reevaluation of the year's goals. What's changed since January?
