Description:
Create for your partner 3 different mixed media background papers. Each piece of paper needs to be at least 8.5"x11" in size. You can start out with magazine or book pages, scrapbook paper, handmade paper, plain copy paper, etc. Texturize and alter each piece of paper until you've transformed it into a new, interesting background paper your partner can use in her collage work. Some ideas for layers/effects: Crumple the paper & accent the raised edges with sand paper or ink Sand or buff away color from parts of the paper Stamp, stencil, paint or use washes to add on more colors Apply more layers of paper Doodle or write using markers or pens Check out Katie Kendrick's how-to video on making collage backgrounds for more inspiration. There's no set limit on how many layers/effects you need to apply to the papers; they just need to be significantly altered in the end. A good range to aim for would be between 4-7 layers/effects.

Yikes! Four to Seven layers!

I tend to be of the Less is More school, but I'm might get some scrap paper and glue and paint and stuff, and then pour some red wine and see what happens.

4-7 layers and/or techniques/effects - like crumpling would be one, sanding away color would be two, paint wash would be three, scribbling with a Sharpie would be four. Easy :)

Nope...besides, if you spill some on the paper it counts as another layer :D

That video is awesome Steph!, I got so excited about the never dull, I went and tried some brasso (metal polish) , that I already had and it works a treat! Yay!

Cool, Danielle! That's good to know in case I can't find the Never Dull. That's what I love most about these videos - you discover all these weird and wonderful art tools you might not have thought about otherwise.

There's also (and I just learned about this too) an alcohol dripping technique that's pretty amazing and would make some fun layers: video here

The technique on the video works with liquid bees wax polish as well.

I think I'm the odd man out: I watched that video where she distresses magazine clippings with the metal polish, etc., and it pained me to see those very usable images disappear into muddy textures. But crumpling, inking, paint, etc., is cool. I hope you'll have this swap again, Stephie, because the timing is right when I have to prepare for an annual film festival. =pout=
