Description:

This is a private swap. I've been wanting to make one of these for the longest time but was always nervous but since @Weeatcrayons lives 8 minutes away from me she can help me (hahahahaha). Anyway, it's going to be a whimsy jar swap and I'm only opening this to people who I have personally swapped with and I know won't fill it with junk. I only have a few people in mind but if you know someone that you trust who would be interested in this swap, please drop me a message with their name. I think this time it's going to be USA only because the packing and shipping of this would be a little expensive if you have to send it International so keep that in mind before sending me some names.

You're going to get a jar 12oz. or larger and decorate it and fill it with all sorts of little treasures. :)

Examples of Whimsy Jars

It does not necessarily have to be decorated in a Kawaii theme but the jar does need to be decorated and the contents need to be at least 75% Kawaii. If you're struggling to fill the rest of it with Kawaii please use your partner's profile to fill the rest of it. So, to reiterate, the jar needs to be decorated nicely and be at least 75% Kawaii and the rest PROFILE based. This is not senders choice. Please carefully read your partners likes and dislikes! For quite a few people, dislikes include NO dollar store items so please keep that in mind

Please make sure if you're filling with paper products to NOT FOLD THEM. Well, just use the general Kawaii swap rules. I trust you guys! :)

I'm giving this a long signup/send time to make sure everyone who's able to join does so and that you have enough time to shop for and decorate your jar!

please, no handmade unless your partner specifically says they enjoy handmade items

Handmade items are fine for me IF the quality is top-notch! :)

rachelcdoyle 03/22/2012 #

ALSO - I don't care if my jar is all profile based. Kawaii is perfect too.. basically, I'm not picky. As long as it's on my profile it's a go!!!

manders2280 03/22/2012 #

Can this be a plastic container? It's much lighter to ship.

ColoradoKate 03/22/2012 #

I don't mind a plastic container, lol! Cheaper to ship and less likely to break. Good thinking there.

I don't mind if you go profile based and non-kawaii for more/most of mine either. ;) Thoughtfully handmade is also fine with me (because I'm stalking Nanette now, lol!). I don't think anyone here would include dollar store stuff, but yeah, I don't want that either. ;)

tiggerkitn25 03/22/2012 #

Quality handmade items are okay with me as well. I'm also not going to fuss if the ratio of profile based items is more than 25%. If it's on my profile I'll love it. =)

And I second the plastic jar question. I know I can find glass but plastic would be cheaper and less fragile.

rachelcdoyle 03/22/2012 #

YUS!! Plastic is AOK! :)

takaratown 03/22/2012 #

Thanks for the invite! I love this swap idea, and I like that it is a private swap from dependable peeps! ;)

I like handmade things and I am okay with getting some. ( just like everyone else is saying though, it should be well constructed ).

nanetteyf 03/22/2012 #

Stalking me?!? Does that finally mean that I'm pretty?? ;

ColoradoKate 03/23/2012 #

If I send to you Nanette, I'll include a letter from your not-so-secret admirerer. ;D

adoluxia 03/23/2012 #

where are you guys finding a plastic jar? i'm not even sure where to look.

weeatcrayons 03/23/2012 #

Look at places such as Michael's or Hobby Lobby or Joanne's. You can also use empty food jars (like spaghetti sauce), just clean/bleach it out really well!!

ColoradoKate 03/24/2012 #

I'm guessing/hoping Target may have them too. I haven't tried looking yet, but I want to get my jar picked out ASAP so I can start thinking about it. ^_^ I've never done a whimsy jar before, so I'm looking forward to the fun!

manders2280 03/24/2012 #

I found one this afternoon at Target, a Rubbermaid plastic storage container with a lime green lid. Bright red and dark blue covers did not seem sporting for a kawaii swap. Their category is kitchen storage. Target also has a home decor storage and organization category. I also see them in a good local hardware store that has a great kitchen section and the supermarket.

Can decorations be removable so people can use the container afterwards?

adoluxia 03/24/2012 #

i've never done a whimsy jar either so i want to make sure i can get the right size jar before joining.

rachelcdoyle 03/25/2012 #

I've NEVER done one before either, this is a first for most of us I think, which makes it all the more fun. We can practice on each other!!

@manders2280 I don't see why decorations can't be removed if someone wants to. So the answer to that question is yes!

Thanks for the plastic jar tips. Jenn, we're going to have to go shopping together soon to pick ours out :D

manders2280 03/25/2012 #

12 ounces is 1 1/2 cups. My container is 2.6 cups and seems a little on the small side. It's a rectangular container - I can use the space more efficiently and make it beautiful. Filling it is like making a sand painting jar - the contents make pictures on the sides of the jar.

I did one public whimsy jar swap. Won't go public on that again. A round jar, even wide-necked, has space that's hard to fill. My jar was much bigger than required so I could put long and wide things into it. I stuffed the extra space with pieces of wrapped candy so things would not rattle. I received a mostly empty jar with dollar store things in it and glitter ribbon around the lid.

I found some gorgeous whimsy jars on etsy in canning jars with color-themed contents. I just favorited several in etsy (link in my profile) that are great examples, and one with a fun decoration. I actually saw that decoration in a magazine somewhere.

Dry cleaning bags are great packing material, by the way. I never, ever throw one out.

takaratown 03/26/2012 #

I have never made one of these before either....but I love to make decoden style jars! I buy canning jars, and then cover the tops in fake whipped cream and cabochons....so I think this swap is right up my ally. I went shopping for a plastic jar today and they were all pretty lame, and ugly...I might just have to go for a glass jar even if the shipping is a tad high, they just look so much nicer to me! ;) Although, I was only looking for typical canning jar shapes, and I like that manders2280 is using a rectangular shaped jar...I did not even think of that?!

hollycopter 03/28/2012 #

I humbly request to be invited to join this AWESOME swap...but it's ok if not :)

nanetteyf 03/28/2012 #

At hobby lobby they had tin ones, less fragile than glass, not quite as lame as plastic

rachelcdoyle 03/30/2012 #

@hollycopter I sent you a message w/ the password! :)

rachelcdoyle 03/30/2012 #

OoOOOoOoO tin ones at hobby lobby?? Guess I know where I'm going. :D

ColoradoKate 03/31/2012 #

I don't mind if my jar is decorated in some sort of permanent way (decoden or whatever) - it'll stay on display in my kawaii dungeon (aka the spare bedroom lol!).

hollycopter 03/31/2012 #

@takaratown I'm with you on the decoden :) I might have to include a bit of deco to my jar! I love the idea of the square containers - they have cute rectangular plastic jars with lids at the Container Store I will be getting I think!

tiggerkitn25 04/ 2/2012 #

I picked up my jar at Michael's yesterday. It is pretty big, but so is the opening on the top so I can safely put things inside without bending them. It's a square-ish plastic jar and came in a three pack. =)

CupcakeSprinkles 04/ 2/2012 #

Whew! I thought I missed the deadline on this =p good luck I thought to click and check hehe. Thanks Rachel for the invite :) fortunately I'll be heading downtown today (where the love of my life Container Store is located) and pick up a container for this whimsy swap :)

Please do not send me handmade items OR earrings (I do not have pierced ears), everything else listed in my profile is certainly fine with me :)

weeatcrayons 04/ 4/2012 #

I got a tin jar at Michael's yesterday for $1.50 :) It's HUGE

hollycopter 04/ 4/2012 #

So excited to get our partners!!!

manders2280 04/ 5/2012 #

After trying to put a few things into the Target box, I took it back and got one from the Container Store - clear Lexan. It will be great fun to fill. And some lucky lady won't get handmade items from me. I'm looking forward to the partner assignments more than usual!

rachelcdoyle 04/ 5/2012 #

I extended "sign up" date by 2 days and send date by 2 days to try and take care of a little problem. If it's not resolved in 2 days partners are going out regardless :)

tiggerkitn25 04/ 5/2012 #

Okay, thanks for posting that. I was afraid I was loosing my mind, lol.

hollycopter 04/ 5/2012 #

Oh no! I was so looking forward to partners today :( Oh well, hope the problem gets resolved Rachel!

ColoradoKate 04/ 5/2012 #

Y'all, Rachel is an awesome host. :) She's workin it out so she's sure this will be a smooth, fair swap. I was sooooo looking forward to partners too, but I'm glad she's being cautious. :)

CupcakeSprinkles 04/ 5/2012 #

I hope everything is okay Rachel :( -hugs-

manders2280 04/ 5/2012 #

It's great how much trust and appreciate that's obvious in this swap! Thanks y'all.

CupcakeSprinkles 04/ 7/2012 #

Ah I went to the Container Store today and I got this cute looking clear paint canister looking "jar" LOL! It's totally cute but I'm afraid if it's not 12oz? It looks big enough to fit a can of soda with lots of space on the side. =\

ColoradoKate 04/ 7/2012 #

I'll spill the beans - @takaratown has gone AWOL, which is a shame since I think she would've sent nice things. She owes Linda for a JANUARY WTA, but hasn't responded to communications on the topic for the last week. She read my PM regarding the WTA on April 1, but didn't reply. She's been on her Facebook since then though, and she PMed me about slams... It's just a bit odd. I hope all is well with her, but I think Rachel agrees with me that this sort of behavior is questionable and therefore inappropriate for a swap like this. We were trying a last ditch effort to get a reply, but no luck so far.

tiggerkitn25 04/ 7/2012 #

I appreciate you trying to get this resolved and protecting your swappers. =) Maybe she can join next time.

CupcakeSprinkles 04/ 7/2012 #

Thank you for letting me know about this. I appreciate it and I'm sorry that she couldn't join :(

manders2280 04/ 7/2012 #

Thanks for keeping an eye on the safety of the swap. I really, really appreciate that.

Linda, a can of soda is 12 ounces, so your "jar" is a good size.

ColoradoKate 04/ 7/2012 #

I just got a PM from @takaratown - apparently she's been ill with a cold. She told me she'd be looking into the WTA situation as soon as she could. I asked her to PM Linda, so I hope that will get all worked out soon. The mail can be uber fickle!

tiggerkitn25 04/ 9/2012 #

I ordered a few things for this swap. I was surprised by how much I had in my stash for this too! =)

takaratown 04/11/2012 #

Hi Everyone, sorry I went AWOL as Colorado Kate put it....which is basically what happened. I went to Japan, and picked up some really terrible flu, just when I started to feel better I got sick again! I guess I ruined my immune system traveling or something. Anyway I hope I am considered again for this type of swap, I am a good swapper, and always send really nice stuff, I promise! Sorry to let some people down for a little while there, but I am back, and I have contacted everyone involved about that random missing WTA I participated in, and it is getting resent in the morning and even better than the first one I sent, with lost of pretty extras!

manders2280 04/16/2012 #

An addendum to the etsy favorites I mentioned earlier: here's the directions for how to decorate jars with toy animals.

tiggerkitn25 04/26/2012 #

I've got everything for this... I just can't figure out what I want to do with the jar! =)

tiggerkitn25 04/30/2012 #

Okay, I finally had a decent idea. I'm making a collage/decoupage from lettersets and memo sheets onto my jar. I'm going with a theme and so far it looks pretty good. I'm waiting for the Mod Podge to dry.
