Description:

I been wanting to make a pieced charm quilt that is made where no two pieces are the same fabric. Before I can start I need to collect quite a bit of fabric - luckily all small bits. What a challenge! The picture is like the one I want to make - Friendship Braid. Patterns abound on the internet for this and others. I plan on just focusing on the fabric for right now.

You might not want to make a full size quilt, but the pieces will be large enough for yo-yos, small projects, dolls, needle books, pincushions, kleenex cozies, coffee sleeves etc.

The Swap Requirements: 1) Send (10) 6" cut squares of good quality 100% quilting fabric. All need to be different fabrics, color range the same okay - just print different prints. they need to be cut with the grain and not cut on the bias.

2) Send on time. A swap sent late does not meet this requirement.

Swapper Requirements: Yes, this one is open to newbies - yaayy! Rated 4.9 or higher and no 1's. If you feel that you were rated unfairly and that might keep you from making this swap, please let me know the circumstances. I will check before assigning partners and ban anyone who has slipped in ratings or is posting on their profile that they will late in sending for any reason. I reserve the right to exclude anyone if I believe they will create problems for other swappers.

If you know that you don't meet the requirements, please don't sign up.

I am not sure if I can participate as I am still getting caught up on swaps, but thank you for specifying GOOD QUALITY fabric. It is a real bummer to send out $10/yard fabric and get Joann fabric in return.

I think this is true for all swaps. I once spend 3 months making a 40 page recycled journal and the one I received in return looked like she spent 1/2 an hour to make all 40 pages. I have some great fabric scraps for this swap. Looking forward to the return pieces.

One question, I am in a major busy time right now taking three on line classes and making art for two different galleries and a bunch of other swaps and other stuff, so.... is it alright if my pieces are a little bigger and/or not cut in the square. I have piles of good scraps and can pull some great pieces, just don't have a lot of time to sit down and cut them to size. Also, don't like to waste fabric.

Another question, where can I get a jewel quilt pattern on line. Do you have any specific sites? Looks like an interesting pattern.

I think it's fine if they are bigger than 6 inches - just not smaller. Several patchwork piece patterns need about the 6 inch size to fit the template in. Square is best.I think when I'm doing an appliqués quilt it doesn't matter as much, but for patchwork you want to avoid any bias in the piece. I googled Friendship Braid quilt and found several variations of the above design. Mine is from Quilters Newsletter maybe 20 years ago. It is a super easy pattern to piece as it's done in strips with only 1 piece as a template.

I've also seen online template in google images searches for the above picture by the names French Braid and Amish Braid. Some use a sashing between the strips and some slight variations.

Well Im confused, what's wrong with Joanns fabrics? I love some of their fabrics for my quilts!!

I agree, Joann's Fabric is not all bad. I don't think fabric must cost ten dollars a yard and come from a local quilt shop to be considered good fabric.

I think most sewers can tell good fabric from the bad. I buy from a quilt store as well as Joannes. But the thin fabric, cheesy printing and dyes, etc. are pretty easy to spot.

I like to pre wash my fabrics before I quilt and have found in thrift stores several hand made dresses from batik cottons that I have cut up and used and they were the prettiest of them all. A quilter knows a good piece of fabric: nothing thin, good print, not garish colors, feels solid.

I have looked at the different quilting sites but can't find a pattern for the one pictured above. Does any one have that pattern??? Thanks

I saw the exact pattern at: http://www.victorianaquiltdesigns.com/VictorianaQuilters/PatternPage/PatternPage.htm

But you have to be a member of the site to access the pattern.

I found a a tutorial! It mentions using the pattern from the Jelly Roll quilt book. You can make it in strips without the border on with a border. If that doesn't whorl for you I'll make a copy of mine. It's from an old magazine. http://www.youtube.com/user/MissouriQuiltCo#p/u/22/EpHAp_pyVXQ
