Description:

I love Flickr (flickr.com), faves, mosaics, and cheap, easy swaps. So it only seems right that my first shot at coordinating a swap should be a cheap & easy swap about creating a mosaic from some of your favorite Flickr photos.

This swap is open to anyone from newbies to seasoned pros, and since it's all web-based, it's open to international swappers as well.

INSTRUCTIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Using the Big Huge Labs (bighugelabs.com/flickr) Mosaic Maker (bighugelabs.com/flickr/mosaic.php), create one 4x4 mosaic (that's 16 pictures) of your favorite Flickr photos. Then:

  • Upload/post your mosaic to your Flickr account or your blog/website.
  • Email the link to your mosaic to three partners.

OR

  • Save your mosaic some place you can easily access it.
  • Email your mosaic AND the links to the original images to three partners.

MAKING YOUR MOSAIC:

Big Huge Labs has an excellent Mosaic Maker with easy-to-follow instructions that guide you through making your 4x4 mosaic.

Following the directions provided by Big Huge Labs, you can either upload your mosaic to your Flickr account, your blog/website or you can save your mosaic to your computer and just email it if you don't have a Flickr account or blog/website.

It's important to give credit to the people whose images you use in your mosaic. Fortunately the Mosaic Maker automatically includes the links when you upload your mosaic to Flickr or your blog/website. If you opt to make your 4x4 mosaic another way, be sure to supply your partners with links to the original images or the profiles of the people whose images you use.

CHOOSING YOUR IMAGES:

The mosaic you make should include your favorite Flickr images -- they can be images by the same person or several people. Just make sure you have 16 images that you really like and want to share with others.

HEARTS:

Give your partner a heart if you love their mosaic, if they send it to you on time, and/or if they meet the swap requirements.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS:

You don't need to have a Flickr account, a Big Huge Labs account or a blog/website to participate in this swap -- but it does help.

The image above is an example of a 5x5 mosaic of Flickr images that I created using the Mosaic Maker. To see how the mosaic looks when it's finished, click here. If I were going to use this mosaic in my swap, I would email this link to my partners.

This may seem daunting, but it's really not -- I'm just trying to be thorough. Have fun, and holler if you need help -- I'll try to respond as quickly as possible.

If this swap goes over well I'd like to try to make future swaps like this more of a challenge. For example, we could make mosaics with specific types of images or colors of images etc...

Great idea - I couldn'n wait, so I've already made my mosaic. Fun! I hope the swap goes well so you'll post more flickr challenges!

Thanks!!! I hope it goes well too. I need to make mine still -- I know which photos I want to use, it's just a matter of doing it.

I might just have to make another one, though, because I've favorited so many new pictures today... :)

This is so cool! I just finished mine. I think I may have to make a few more!!

There are a lot of other fun projects to do on the BIg Labs site. This is awesome.

Hi,

I have used the mosaic maker before but today when I went in and chose mosaic maker.....4 X 4 it only gave me the option of the 4 X 4 with 13 images and a large centre pic, anyone else having this problem?

CajunLady 01/ 6/2008 #

Okay I CANNOT get this site to work for me. I've been trying for the past 15 minutes and it's not doing ANYTHING!

Shirley 01/ 7/2008 #

I had so much fun doing mine! Thank you supaflydesigns =)

Thanks supafly! I love making mosaics and it was my first swap!

CajunLady 01/ 7/2008 #

wow can someone please explain to me what I am doing wrong?

CajunLady 01/ 7/2008 #

ok I got it now, nevermind.

Coffeelatte 01/ 8/2008 #

Gem - I sent you a message...the trick is to choose the option where you can set it up with 4 rows and 4 columns (not the pre-set selection of 4 squares and a large center.)

Mine went out very late last night to my partners...these are so much fun to do. I've been a Flickr-addict for a couple years, and do a mosaic almost every month of my personal favorites. This was a challenge to try and pick a really super-select bunch to share.

Great challenge, Supaflydesigns. I hope you do more like this! It's a great way to find out about new people, places, things...

(You all know about making Etsy Treasury lists, don't you...same kind of incredible addiction...but you have to wait and be patient to get the opportunity to share a Treasury...but there are SOOOOO many great things over on Etsy...)

good job on explaining the set up of this on flikr, this was my first swap, and even though it was only "virtual" I really enjoyed!

GemMedia 01/ 9/2008 #

Thanks for the message Coffeelatte....I eventually figured it out but the one with the 13 pics and large centre photo is fun to make and I look forward to doing more. I will send my partners their link sometime tomorrow!

Thanks for the great swap idea Supafly!

HI there, I just dropped from the Valentine swap only because I had someone get a bit upset with me for 'using' one of their photos to create my valentine mosaic. I created it in anticipation of sending out to my swap partners but the person was unhappy with me and asked me to delete it! So, before you guys use someone's photo/artwork make sure they don't say "You must ask permission" in their profile. After that experience I may just stop making mosaics for awhile.
